Abstract
The paper analyzes N. V. Gogol’s work on sketches of travelling fragments in his foreign correspondence of 1836, parts of which have become the corresponding fragments of the “Dead Souls” poem. Gogol’s work on sketches of traveling fragments occurred mainly in the letters to the sisters, Anna and Elizabeth, and mother, Maria Ivanovna Gogol, in letters to close friends, lyceum students A. S. Danilevsky and N. J. Prokopovich, and a former student of the writer, M. P. Balabina. A comparison of Gogol’s travelling experiences in the foreign letters of 1836 allows to state that Gogol quickly divided impressions into those which became ordinary fast and those which retained their strength and depth for a long time. This watershed of experiences was what forced Gogol to seek additional “witty turns” in his descriptions of the daily life in the cities (the description of the dinner with an old Frenchman at “Faucon” and the description of “adventures from nothing” in the stagecoach during the journey from Vevey to Lausanne) contained in the letters to M. P. Balabina. The article shows that these samples of travel writing in the letters were also a part of the checking by a real journey of some recommendations to the authors of future travelling novels of dialogue scenes from “How to Write a Book of Travels?” by F. Marryat. Those scenes were translated in the “Library for Reading” by A.I. Senkovsky in 1834 without the reference to the author of the work. In addition, these samples by Gogol’s take into account the experience of V. G. Belinsky’s critique of E. Bulwer-Lytton’s novel “Rhine Pilgrim” translated in 1835. From that critique Gogol took note of the criticism of the excessive presence of “Rhine pilgrims” author’s impressions in the descriptions of the protagonists’ travelling experiences during the journey. By the end of 1836, Gogol had a few sketches in letters describing a traveller’s experiences which, almost unchanged or after a little elaboration, became the fragments of “Dead Souls”. This article establishes the following “related sketches”:1) a description of the writer’s kind dinner with a Frenchman and his wife, the order of dishes in which there is the basis of the amiable perception of resemblance and differences in tastes (a letter to M. P. Balabina), in “Dead Souls” becomes the description of Sobakevich’s destruction of gastronomic tastes of the governor’s table, brought by doctors – Germans and French, during the lunch with Chichikov; 2) a description of N. V. Gogol’s complicated descent from the roof of the stagecoach, the details of which were not kept in the memory (a letter to M. P. Balabina) transforms, in the end of the seventh chapter of “Dead Souls”, into the description of Chichikov’s servant and the coachman’s long climb down the stairs after visiting the institution, the events in which are barely expressed; 3) Gogol’s systematic reference in his letters to A. S. Danilevsky and N. J. Prokopovich of division of impressions on actually grand and those which quickly become ordinary, experienced by the writer during travels, appears in the introduction to the sixth chapter as lengthy descriptions, experienced by the author of “Dead Souls”, of a gradual loss of interest to any unfamiliar place during constant travels. Separately, these sketches of letters need to be complemented with a picture of the treasurer’s nutshell carriage from “Rhine pilgrims” by E. Bulwer-Lytton, which in “Dead Souls” is replaced by a picture of watermelon on wheels of landowner Korobochka.
