Item Are the Changes in Ukraine's Mass Media Induced by the "Orange" Revolution Really Irreversible?(2006) Pavlenko, Rostyslav; Klymenko, IrynaThe research in mass media field must be based on the empirical data of system character. There are only a couple of experimental centers capable of undertaking media research of such kind in Ukraine; one of them is a center for Media Reforms at the Kyiv Mohyla Academy Journalism School. Although the situation changed with the outbreak of the revolution, only a few attempts to analyze its media coverage in the foreign mass media were made. This study focuses on the New York Times coverage of the presidential elections and the Orange revolution in Ukraine and compares the differences in portraying various parties of the conflict. Frame analysis provides methodological background for the study and critical theory serves as a theoretical framework.Item Framing "Katrina"(2006) Fedchenko, YevhenThe analysis of Katrina coverage by the American media is presented in the article. The questions of news framing process, predominant editorial criteria, challenges faced by the journalists, and the change in traditional US agenda setting theory are addressed. The main episodic and thematic framing elements of the coverage are identified in the context of increasing media influence on the public opinion and political agenda-setting process.Item Globalization: aid or constraint to the democratic function of the media? Revolutions in Serbia and Ukraine(2006) Venger, OlesyaThe problems of the impact of globalization on the world and the Ukrainian media as well as on the Ukrainian national identity, in the context of media activities during the revolution, are addressed in the article. The democratic functions of the media provide a theoretical platform needed to describe the inadequacies of the world media coverage during conflicts. The comparison of different situations faced by the media during revolutions in Serbia and Ukraine is offered. Print Culture and FSA Photographs(2006) Kolchynsky, DmytroWhat is it that makes science scientific? Is that knowledge obtained or the method? These central questions are addressed in the article. The paper offers textual analysis of the articles dealing specifically with the question of rhetoric and science as well as textual analysis of Car a Finnegan's book Picturing Poverty. The article proposes a view that social studies, communication studies or other humanities, which are unified by the passion to rhetoric, must leave testable, universal and non-judgmental scientific knowledge alone and what is more stop exploiting the status of science in their self-representation.Item Remarks on the current state of media management and journalism education in Ukraine(2006) Daradan, TetianaThe article offers a short overview of the media management practices in Ukraine and raises the issue of human resources training for the area.
