Abstract
The article is focused on the problem of our / their space in Kalynets’ poetry. These categories can be interpreted as fundamental in Kalynets’ poetry as long as they are connected not only with the sphere of poetics but also with the sphere of ideology. The opposition between our and their space is based on the concept of a place which can be described in terms of harmonic interaction between a landscape and a human being. This is demonstrated by the adaptability of the human body and human lifestyle to the local conditions or by the inclusion of artifacts in the space of the nature. The symbolic geography plays a great part in the re-building of the authentic world model. It is based on the idea of organizing the space in accordance with the criteria of sacred / profane, superimposed on or combined with the opposition between ours and theirs. Their space, hostile and strange at the same time, is defined more geographically or topographically and less linguistically. On the contrary, our space is represented by multiplicity of condensed culture symbols. The strategy of transformation of their space into ours is based both on marking their space with verbal and visual signs of ours and on naming, while the things of their space are identified with the names of our space. The activity of transformation includes modification of the landscape through organizing and planting space as well as the modification of the cultural space through translating and naming. Moreover, planting of our herbs and vegetables can be explained through the fact that for Kalynets, the symbolic role of a plant is as important as the practical one. In other words, our plants are connected with Ukrainian flora as well as with the Ukrainian linguistic model of the world. Plant symbolism for Kalynets is the most appropriate way of identification, connected with problems of the cultural space, memory, and word. The other strategy of space transformation includes naming, which is based on the act of identification of their places and landscapes with our names. What is important, these names are not free but are associated with our landscapes, with our symbolic geography.
