dc.descriptionTh is article examines the representations of Ukrainians and Jews in Jonathan Safran Foer’s Everything Is Illuminated (2002), focusing on the ethical function of various modes in the representation of Holocaust trauma. Rather than treating the novel primarily as a narrative about Ukrainian antisemitism or Jewish victimhood, the study argues that Foer constructs a polyphonic vision of Ukrainian-Jewish relations that resists ethnic essentialism and simplistic moral dichotomies. Drawing on the theoretical frameworks of Maurice Halbwachs, Jan Assmann, Marianne Hirsch, Dominick LaCapra, and Cathy Caruth, the article interprets the novel as a work of postmemory in which even humor, irony, satire, and grotesque become mechanisms for reconstructing cultural memory and working through historical trauma. Particular attention is paid to the contrasting representations of post-Soviet Ukraine and the prewar shtetl of Trachimbrod, demonstrating how different comic registers shape readers’ ethical engagement with the past. Th e analysis also explores the symbolism of collecting, fragmented narration, and multilingual discourse as strategies of recovering a destroyed world. Th e article concludes that comic representation does not diminish the gravity of the Holocaust but instead restores the human complexity of history, making ethical communication across generations and national communities possible.en_US
dc.description.abstractСтаттю присвячено аналізові образів українців та євреїв у романі Джонатана Сафрана Фоера Everything Is Illuminated (2002). Дослідження виходить із припущення, що центральним художнім механізмом роману є не лише реконструкція пам’яті про Голокост, а й використання різних форм комічного як способу етичного наближення до колективної травми. Показано, що Фоер послідовно уникає чорно-білих моделей репрезентації українсько-єврейських взаємин, натомість створюючи багатоголосий наратив, у якому іронія, гумор та сатира функціонують як засоби деавтоматизації історичної пам’яті. Окрему увагу приділено способам конструювання пам’яті, а також функції колекціонування як форми постпам’яті.uk_UA
