Abstract
The article discusses the Soviet and modern Ukrainian historiography on children’s homelessness in the Soviet Ukraine during the formation of the Soviet totalitarian regime. The historiography of the legal framework and activities of the state authorities for overcoming children’s homelessness in the Soviet Ukraine during the formation of the Soviet totalitarian regime offers diverse thematic coverage. The author identifies two periods in the historiography addressing children’s homelessness in the Soviet Ukraine. The first period covers the years of 1950–1980, while the second period starts in the 1990s with the dissolution of the Soviet Union and opening the archives that were previously unavailable to scholars. Historiography of the first mentioned period is marked with publishing the first historical and pedagogical studies on the topic. However, these works were heavily influenced by the Soviet ideological dogmas of the time. Consequently, the first critical works appeared only during the “Perestroika” period. Specifically, the scholars started exploring activities of both public charity organizations and state authorities in the joint effort to overcome children’s homelessness in the Soviet Ukraine. At the same time, rich material preserved in the regional archives still remains underexplored, suggesting a huge potential for further studies.
