Abstract
The article considers application of Freudian psychoanalysis by E. Shevalev in “On Paralogical Thinking”. His work was published in 1930, and it is one of the first receptions of psychoanalysis in Ukraine. Freudian concepts ‘unconscious’, ‘purposive idea’, ‘loss of reality’ and ‘the omnipotence of thoughts’ appear in the text. The author incorporates ‘unconscious’ into his argument in a strictly psychoanalytical sense of the term. He speaks of the hidden, mostly unconscious effects which define the whole structure of the formal consciousness and of the subject’s conscious conduct. In his theoretical findings, the author starts from the psychoanalytical notion of the two principles of mental functioning. Shevalev’s work “On Paralogical Thinking” is also a valuable source on the history of science in Ukraine. It represents the axiology of the author’s intellectual culture. The rational logical thought is the researcher’s dominant value. He considers logic to be a natural and innate human trait, a crucial evolutionary adaptation to the external realty. Being a professor in psychiatry, Shevalev bases his theory of logical cognition on the epistemological theory of notorious physicist Ernst Mach. His prior methods are typology and classification. Although the author defines and redefines his concepts of ‘paralogical thinking’, ‘normal logical thinking’ and ‘affective thought’ repeatedly, his typology retains uncertain. Shevalev’s effort to suit the terminologies and classifications of all his authorities – Cleperéde, Bleuler, Janet, and Freud – at once identifies the lines of conflict of psychiatric and psychoanalytic narratives about human psyche. Still, in the course of his study, Shevalev follows the fundamental psychoanalytic principle of studying pathology for acquiring knowledge about normalcy.
