dc.description.abstractBackground. Anatol Perepadya’s literary translations belong to the best samples in Ukrainian translation literature. A. Perepadya advocated the return to the spoken language and language of the classics, dominated by Ukrainian words of native origin. This translator actively worked on the collection of rare, dialect words that he used in his translations. This article will analyze the translations of Albert Camus’ literary works by A. Perepadya. Purpose. The purpose of this article is to make a comparative survey of original texts and translations, focusing on verb usage found in direct speech reporting, where the only verb dire (to say) has been used. Methods. This article applies the method of corpus analysis. The material for this article is the French- Ukrainian parallel corpus of A. Camus’ original works translated into Ukrainian by A. Perepadya and located on the platform of the Ukrainian language corpus https://mova.institute/. Results. In the Ukrainian translations of A.Perepadya we observed a wide array of synonyms in direct speech reporting where only the verb dire (to say) was used in the French original. This survey deliberately focused on non-direct translations of the French verb dire. All Ukrainian verbs that were detected in the corpus search are divided into two large groups. The First group defined are translations of French verb dire which denote verbs of speech without resorting to the direct translation of говорити, казати; for example: промурмотіти, підхопити, вигукнути, гукнути, зашепотіти, кинути. The Second group consists of verbs that denote assertion, approval or show empathy: підтвердити, признатися, схвалити, признатися, підтвердити, порадити, пообіцяти, заспокоїти. Conclusion and Discussion.This article shows alternative translations in Ukrainian of the French verb dire (to say) in reporting direct speech. This may be the result of a specific translator’s aim to avoid tautology, or for simplification of the text. Ukrainian direct speech reports are more often to be formed with diverse verbs of speech, which is why A. Perepadya sometimes uses synonyms while translating the French verb dire.en_US
