dc.descriptionThis articles aims at developing a political science perspective on a potential typology of forms of colonial expansion which would require consideration of both the postcolonial research tradition, grounded in humanitarian and culture studies, and review of the scope of research of political science and its core subject of study – power and power relations. Firstly, the paper briefly discusses and compares some definitions of empire taken from Russian, British, and Ukrainian political science dictionaries. Secondly, a couple of examples are drawn to illustrate that the forms of power relations and types of exploitation can be important in distinguishing different forms of colonial subordination. Thirdly, the term “expansion” is briefly discussed and illustrated to show that imposition of imperial policies in already subjugated realms can also be regarded as a form of colonial expansion. It is then followed by a list of components which should be taken into consideration when developing a political science perspective on postcolonial studies. This article provides an attempt at selecting the core characteristics of how a typology of colonial expansion can be developed in further researches on this topic, taking into account plethora of approaches to defining empire, imperialism, and postcolonial condition. Thus this article does not provide a fully developed typology but lists the core characteristics which it should incorporate in order to allow for in-depth studies of colonial expansion from the political science perspective.en
