Abstract
This article is an attempt to analyze texts of Ukrainian poet Oleh Lysheha through the concept of musical code. The concept of code provides the possibility of deeper understanding of poetic texts. Furthermore, the search of codes reveals various combinations of kinds of art – in particular, music and cinematography – in the author’s literary texts. The aim of this research is to analyze two poetries from composition "The Great Bridge" – "Song 551" and "Song 212" – using the musical code. In poetry, sings of the musical code are repeats, improvisations, names of famous singers and the lyrics of their songs. In these poetries, we are able to find appeals to African-American music, in particular, spiritual songs. One of the most famous spirituals "I shall not be moved", which was sang by numerous famous singers, and also by Ella Fitzgerald (Oleh Lysheha and Grygorij Chubay admired her creativity) refers to prophet Jeremia. At the same time, lines from the Bible convert this song as an African-American to the universal one that unites people from all around the globe. In fact, this song (some sentences could be read in "Song 212") discloses similarities between African slaves and Ukrainian poets. It demonstrates pursuits of both for expressing their ideas and proclaiming freedom in their actions and beliefs. Oleh Lysheha brings sounds of the US music to the Ukrainian poetry, rethinks the content of the songs, and expands the context of the sound. With addressing musical texts into poetry, the author expands the possibilities of this poetry to "go out" from a particular environment and get the "universal" sound. To sum it up, analyzing the texts with the concept of code significantly expands the perception of "The Great Bridge", motivates to go beyond the text canvas, and shows the diversity of poetries.
