Item The role of contextualization in teaching discourse competence: the experience of the English language university course aimed at acquiring proficiency(2023) Kucherova, Olena; Riabokon, HannaThe article focuses on the importance of teaching a language in full contextual perspective, not single lexical or grammatical units, but certain texts in the context of real-life communication, which contributes to discourse competence. The article outlines basic communicative strategies and examines teaching methods and techniques for developing academic skills required by the Common European Framework of Reference for Language. The article aims to prove the importance of context in teaching general discourse competence, which is a prerequisite for acquiring proficiency at the university level. The authors present the main outcomes of their teaching experience in the course of English language for Philological specialties for third year students at National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. The topics suggested to students are complex academic or professional issues withing such abstract themes as World English, Business Communication, The Mind, News and Media, Global Issues, Time, Technology and Innovation. The syllabus for the course is designed in a contextual approach, which implies wide use of authentic materials of various genres and themes, instead of concentrating only on one textbook. The authors argue that discourse competence should be acquired through a number of receptive and productive methods by pattern practice drills, listening, speaking and writing. Among the types of authentic materials suggested by the authors are newspaper and magazine articles, TED Talks, discussions, news, documentaries, interviews, parts of the books and other types of texts. The authentic texts should be brought to the classroom not only by teacher, but also by students. The research suggests learning objectives for four communicative language strategies: reception, production, mediation, and interaction, which should be clearly stipulated in the syllabus and considered when designing particular tasks. The results of the study can be employed by university teachers for a language course design.Item Temporal structure of rap narratives vs. fairy tales (syntactical and narrative facets)(2023) Kravchenko, Nataliia; Soshko, Oksana; Kononets, YuliiaThe paper focuses on the linguistic and narrative manifestations of linear time in rap lyrics compared to fairy tales. It aims at scrutinizing narrative time by the criteria of its acceleration, retardation and generalization, based on syntactical, narrative and pragmatic devices, interpreted from the viewpoint of their iconic isomorphism to the expressed temporal relations. Linear time in fairy tales is self-sufficient, forward-oriented and isolated from external time, while rap narratives are consistent with historical time and free in its movement from the past to the present, and vice versa. Time acceleration in rap occurs in the past or dramatic present and involves syntactical devices aimed either at reducing syntactic patterns by means of detached constructions, asyndeton, nominative sentences and ellipsis, which iconically reproduce the events’ change rate, or at increasing emotional power through climax, reproducing time "condensation." Instead, fairy tale time is accelerated by lexical-semantic means. The slowed time in rap lyrics relies either on the redundancy of the syntactical pattern, provided by anaphora, repetitions, polysyndeton and enumerations, iconically reproducing the time extension, or on meaning implicatures and their corresponding violation of pragmatic maxims, foregrounded by enjambment, catachresis, aposiopesis and parenthetical phrases, semantically incoherent with the clause they must qualify. Instead, the time extension in a tale never relies on the inference of the deliberately implicated meanings and is expressed by formula and plot elements repetitions. In contrast to subsequent and monotemporal tale narratives, rap lyrics time is often marked by the violation of the temporal sequence, indicating psychological time, inherent in poetry in general.Item Особливості перекладу військової поезії Любові Якимчук англійською мовою(2023) Бовт, АльонаВ статті розглянуто особливості і труднощі перекладу української військової поезії англійською мовою на прикладі одного з відомих творів сучасної української поетеси Любові Якимчук. Окреслено проблематику художнього перекладу і перекладу поезії зокрема як особливо складного виду. Розкрито особливості військової поезії, які мають враховуватися при перекладі. Надано стислий опис творчого шляху Любові Якимчук, тематики і стилістичних особливостей її творів, що увійшли до її збірки "Абрикоси Донбасу", яка в англійському перекладі вийшла у світ у 2021 році. Зазначено, що головною складністю перекладу поезій з цієї збірки англійською мовою на формальному рівні є так звана "деконструкція" слів і виразів (зміна наголосу, зміна місцями літер, розщеплення слів на складові), що графічно позначено на письмі. Таким чином поетеса має намір наочно показати, які руйнівні наслідки має війна як для людини, так і для її оточення. Ця стратегія позначає спадкоємність з українським футуристичним рухом 1920-х років. На змістовному рівні головними особливостями є глибокі внутрішні переживання, передані за допомогою експресіоністичного стилю письма, а саме: яскравого вираження почуттів; розкриття теми трагізму людської долі; деформація і деконструкція світу; домінування мотивів смерті, війни та самотності; символічність; ірраціональність; контраст світла й тіні, тощо. Проаналізовано англомовний переклад поезії "Молитва", яку Любов Якимчук прочитала на минулорічній церемонії вручення всесвітньо-відомої премії Grammy Awards. Зазначено, що ця поезія тематично відноситься до категорії молитовне замовляння і є своєрідним авторським переосмисленням молитви "Отче наш". Розкрито особливості відтворення форми і змісту цього вірша англійською мовою перекладачами Оксаною Максимчук і Максом Росочинським. Доведено, що завдяки відповідним перекладацьким трансформаціям в перекладі поезії було збережено як структуру і форму вірша (майже кожний рядок за кількістю лексичних одиниць і ритмікою точно відтворює оригінал, не втрачаючи при цьому змістовно), так і сенс, з додаванням важливих відтінків значення певним словам, що свідчить про високий рівень адекватності перекладу.Item Основні засади забезпечення якості у галузі цифрової освіти у ЄПВО(2023) Харченко, ОксанаСтаття присвячена аналізу основних засади європейської політики щодо забезпечення якості у сфері цифрової освіти. Забезпечення якості в цифровій освіті потребує системного підходу, включаючи стандарти, підготовку викладачів, доступність технологій, адекватне оцінювання, захист даних та постійне вдосконалення. Європейський вимір щодо забезпечення якості цифрової освіти включає ряд ініціатив та рекомендацій, які спрямовані на поліпшення якості та ефективності цифрової освіти в країнах-членах Європейського Союзу. Ці ініціативи та документи спрямовані на покращення якості цифрової освіти в Європі та впровадження стандартів і рекомендацій для забезпечення ефективного використання цифрових технологій у освітньому процесі. На підставі здійсненого дослідження можна стверджувати, до у ЄПВО є загальна стратегія розвитку цифрової освіти, що базується на комплексному системному підході. Це включає в себе певні критерії, а саме: ефективність навчання (цифрові технології стають все більш поширеними в освітньому процесі. Забезпечення якості в цифровій освіті допомагає гарантувати, що ці технології використовуються ефективно для покращення процесу навчання і забезпечення оптимального результату); доступність освіти (нові можливості для навчання та доступні для всіх, незалежно від їхнього місця проживання, соціального статусу, фізичних обмежень); адаптація до змін (цифрові технології швидко розвиваються і важливо мати механізм забезпечення якості, що дозволяє швидко адаптуватися до нових тенденцій і змін, тому освітні програми та ресурси залишаються актуальними і відповідають потребам сучасного світу); оцінювання та удосконалення (забезпечення якості в цифровій освіті дозволяє оцінювати ефективність навчальних програм, методів та ресурсів та забезпечувати перманентне підвищення якості освітнього процесу); захист даних та приватності (у цифровому середовищі важливо забезпечувати захист особистих даних і забезпечувати їх приватність, що включає в себе встановлення відповідних стандартів та політик щодо захисту даних).Item Біблійні алюзії в романі Г. К. Честертона "Людина, котра була Четвергом"(2023) Польщак, АнеліяСтаття покликана до того, щоб уможливити більш широко та об’єктивно оцінити особливості літературного процесу першої половини минулого століття за рахунок активнішого включення в нього творів письменників католицького відродження. Честертон належить до грона авторів, творчість яких відносять до цього літературного напряму і для котрих характерні спільні риси світогляду, принципова згода в сфері поглядів релігійно-філософських та у ставленні до питань політики та історії. Для цих творців важливим є їхнє розуміння католицтва та прагнення впроваджувати його принципи у життя. Розвідка залучає передусім герменевтичний метод аналізу біблійних алюзій честертоновського тексту, що природним чином включає такі завдання як виявлення цих алюзій, з’ясування способів їх використання та оригінальності, розвиток їх автором. Поштовхом та основою для дослідження стали ідеї критичних розвідок, котрі зауважують процес залучення інтелектуалів (до яких, безперечно, належить Честертон) до вивчення Біблії та творчого використання її спадку, важливість Біблії та традиції у детальному обговоренню та розробці цим англійським письменником, безпосереднє використання Честертоном біблійних алюзій. Такий аналіз, який зачіпає наявність у Честертона біблійних алюзій, зокрема у романі "Людина, яка була Четвергом", започаткував розв’язання цієї проблеми використання біблійних алюзій Честертоном, цілі такого явища та способів. Стаття подає аналіз того, як Честертон активно використовує біблійні алюзії з метою створення відповідного настрою роману. Розвідка демонструє текстуальні збіги (такі як "підніжок" та "трон"), використання значимих слів на зразок wild, mad, аналіз значущих синонімів, які використовуються в обидвох залучених текстах. Створені та підсилені за допомогою алюзій образи допомагають посилити основну тему роману, пов’язану із мотивом боротьби добра і зла, яка хоч і має відповідний гротескний шарм, все ж не втрачає значимості.Item Лінгвістика миру як шлях до одухотворення особистості під час війни(2023) Коваленко, Альона; Бовт, АльонаСтаттю присвячено розкриттю сутності лінгвістики миру та її ролі в процесі одуховторення особистості в часи війни. Зазначено, що поняття "лінгвістика миру" є відносно новим в сучасному науковому дискурсі і тільки починає активно досліджуватися. Зазначено, що спочатку лінгвістика миру ґрунтувалася на принципах використання мови "для мирного спілкування", але наразі її значення і роль значно розширюються і передбачають дотримання шести принципів, а саме: вибір на користь миру, а отже – життя; проголошення миру замість насильства; трансляція миру під час вербальної і невербальної комунікації; використання мови миру на декількох рівнях: внутрішньому, міжособистісному, міжгруповому, міжнародному, міжкультурному та екологічному; сприйняття кожної особистості як унікальної і незвичайної; розуміння того, що мова миру не завжди проста. Підкреслено, що лінгвістика миру має прикладний характер, оскільки мир має бути не теоретичним поняттям, а реальним станом, якого можна досягти за допомогою мови миру, застосовуючи ідеї, отримані в результаті теоретичного вивчення, на практиці. Зазначено, у цьому прагненні до досягнення миру завдяки мові учасники міждисциплінарного поля лінгвістики миру намагаються створити адекватні передумови для мирного спілкування користувачів мови в різноманітних умовах. Визначено, що мова повинна виконувати миротворчу і мирозбережувальну функцію в житті людини, мову слід викладати, вивчати і використовувати для вдосконалення людини і для досягнення високих цілей; користувачі мови мають, в першу чергу, навчитися конструктивно і ефективно взаємодіяти один з одним; викладачі мов повинні допомогти учням навчитися спілкуватися мирно. У якості практичної вправи наведено запитання, запропоновані відомим дослідником, одним з засновників лінгвістики миру Ф. Гомесом де Матосом, за допомогою яких можна перевірити як свої знання і навички з мирної комунікації, так і запропонувати їх здобувачам вищої освіти. Активне залучення студентів до вивчення основ лінгвістики миру сприятиме вихованню одухотвореної особистості, здатної вистояти і пройти труднощі і жахіття війни, не втративши людяності, віри в краще і надії на світле майбутнєItem (Post)Soviet Russia vs the West: The Ideological Enemy's Image in English Translations of Fiction(2023) Rudnytska, NataliiaThe Russo-Ukrainian war, especially the full-scale invasion of 2022, made the issue of manipulation particularly topical, including skewed representation in translation. On the basis of a detailed analysis of linguistic choices of translators, considered within the broad historical-political and ideological context, the paper demonstrates the discrepancies between the images of the (post) Soviet Russian and Western societies created in the novels by the contemporary Russian authors Oleg Pavlov, Viktor Pelevin, Vladimir Sorokin and Lyudmila Ulitskaya and those reproduced in the English translations. The ramifications of such modification acquire special significance under the circumstances, especially due to the increased attention to translation as an "ideological weapon" on the part of the Russian scholars and critics.Item Literary Translation and Elimination of the Soviet Ideology in Contemporary Ukraine(2023) Rudnytska, NataliiaDe-Sovietization became an important issue of the post-Soviet Ukrainian agenda, and the Russo-Ukrainian war gave a strong impetus to it. The subject matter of the present study is the instrumentality of literary translation in eliminating the Soviet ideology in independent Ukraine. The research is made within the sociological approach, which allows to describe the specific features of the sphere of literary translation, influenced by the sociopolitical and ideological factors. Ukrainian experience of implementation of psycholinguistic component into media education(2023) Krylova-Grek, Yuliya; Korniyaka, OlgaThe article covers the Ukrainian experience of the of integrating a psycholinguistic component into media and information education,which we consider as one of the most important elements of the information security control system in the media space. The psycholinguistic component aims at providing special knowledge and skills for analysing linguistic means and non-linguistic tools used in the media to enhance the impact on the reader’s world view (media and information literacy), identifying fraudulent messages to prevent access to personal data (cyber literacy). This component also involves the acquisition by the media consumer of the skills of identifying the methods and techniques used by journalists to influence the reader. These skills allow analysing texts and understand the author’s intentions and purpose, as well as identifying the used means and methods of influencing the reader. We have designed a course of media and information education for journalists and consumers of media products in order to help them fully navigate the modern information and communication space and effectively counteract disinformation. The course aims to: (1) the formation of competence in the field of media, information and cyber literacy; (2) inclusion in the media literacy course of the basics of psycholinguistic analysis of materials; (3) the development of cyber literacy. The research used such methods as questionnaires, analysis and synthesis, arrangement, and systematization of theoretical and empirical material, psycholinguistic analysis of text. Conclusions. In the study, the psychological readiness of a media specialist to counteract manipulative informational and communicative influences is considered within the scope of the activity approach and in relation to such individual characteristics as motivational, cognitive, informational-technical, emotional-volitional, and moral-ethical competences. A media specialist’s possession of all these competencies is necessary for the formation of a stable psychological readiness to resist manipulative influences.Item Psycholinguistic approach to the analysis of manipulative and indirect hate speech in media(2022) Krylova-Grek, YuliyaThe present study takes a psycholinguistic approach to the analysis of Russian media texts published between December 1, 2020 to May 31, 2021. I aimed to provide a scientific basis for the existence of manipulative and indirect hate speech using an interdisciplinary methodology comprising linguistic, psycholinguistic, and other analytical methods such as fact-checking and logical analysis. This facilitated the identification of techniques employed by the authors of the respective texts. In the article, I describe how I use the methodology to analyse media texts. I discovered that three basic types of hate speech were used to influence the audience’s consciousness: (1) direct hate speech; (2) indirect (hidden) hate speech; and (3) manipulative hate speech. The first and second types were the most common. This may be explained by the fact that direct hate speech is condemned by international organisations and its use may be a reason for lawsuits against media outlets and their further penalisation. Texts with evidence of the second and third types of hate speech aimed to create a negative attitude toward a particular nationality, race, citizen, and so on. I consider such behaviour to be an early manifestation of widespread discrimination and other forms of intolerance, including possible violence and genocide. The present study was carried out in collaboration with a Crimean human rights group. The author was invited to participate as an expert in the field of psycholinguistic textual analysis. The research was prepared and completed at the beginning of February 2022, on the eve of the invasion of Ukraine. We have gathered evidence of indirect and manipulative hate speech that dehumanised, demonised, and marginalised Ukrainian citizens. This has led to violence against the civilian population and high numbers of casualties. The aforementioned methodology will continue to be used in the analysis of current media content.Item Linguistic tools of persuasion in travel advertisements(2023) Honcharuk, OlenaBackground. The language of advertising in general has been widely researched since advertising became integrated in all spheres of our life. The researchers also mark the prominent role of extralinguistic elements in advertising. At the same time, the language as an important element of persuasion in tourist advertisements requires a more detailed coverage. Contribution to the research field. The present paper makes an overview of the linguistic tools of persuasion in travel advertisements. Purpose. The purpose of the present study is to analyse how linguistic tools are used to enhance the effectiveness and persuasive power of travel advertisements. Methods. The given research uses the method of description and analysis in order to identify the essential linguistic tools of persuasion in travel advertisements and to evaluate their role in enhancing the effectiveness of travel advertisements. Results. The study of travel brochures from leading tour operators based in the UK, Poland, Australia, New Zealand, the USA has shown that the language of advertising in tourism and in other spheres share a lot of common features, such as the extensive use of commendatory adjectives, frequent occurrence of metaphoric and metonymic expressions, play of words, modified forms of proverbs and sayings, comparisons. At the same time, the language of travel advertisements proper has its own specificities. The linguistic tools used in the texts of travel advertisements highlight the benefits of the advertised tour and help to create a clear image of the given destination. For this purpose, they are often complemented by additional information concerning the advertised tourist site. Discussion. The collected data demonstrate that expressive linguistic tools contribute to the overall effectiveness of travel advertisements.Item The Representation of Psychological War-Related Traumas in the Literary Works of Contemporary Burundian and Ukrainian Writers: African and European Perspectives(2023) Mbonyingingo, Audace; Moiseyenko, Olena; Mazin, DmytroThe article explores the representation of psychological traumas afflicted by war in contemporary literary writing by Burundian (African) and Ukrainian (European) authors who were witnesses of the events described in their works. Based on the existing linguistic and psychological theoretical approaches to the phenomenon of a mental wound, a comparative perspective is provided on the nature, literary, and linguistic manifestations of psychological trauma in Burundian novels by Antoine Kaburahe and Marie-Therese Toyi, presenting the tragic, but stoic experience during the civil war in the East African country, and the shocked, but resilient experience of Ukrainian civilians during the full-scale aggression of the russian federation in the Ukrainian diary (Serhiy Zhadan) and essay writing (Ilya Kaminsky, Ludmila Khersonsky, Zarina Zabrisky, Elena Andreychykova, Andrei Krasniashikh) available in English translation. The implemented analysis allows for a deeper understanding of the effects of wartime psychological trauma on the lives of an individual. Due to a more distant time perspective, the protagonists of Burundian texts reveal both the tragedy of the interethnic civil war conflict and the importance of addressing the causes of the conflict to prevent its replication in the future. In the Ukrainian texts, the initial stage of psychological trauma obtaining can be observed, which accounts for a range of the related emotional states among the characters who do not fully realize yet the traumatization process they have been going through during the first days and weeks of the russian military invasion. The book is structured into three parts, offering synchronous class activities, independent work, and application of knowledge. The ten units cover various topics, including self-awareness, positive thinking, goal setting, communication, problem-solving, resilience in relationships and the workplace, self-care and well-being. Each lesson incorporates engaging activities such as introductory discussions, surveys, analysing inspirational videos, role-play, vocabulary building activities, and writing tasks. The book provides resources for teachers, including a sample lesson plan, survey questions, and further reading suggestions. It also directly addresses students, offering a collection of engaging activities, projects, and sample answers to enhance their oral and written language skills. Additionally, self-check and final examination questions are included to assess their progress. The book activities are thoughtfully designed to enhance students' vocabulary, listening, speaking, reading, writing, critical thinking, cultural awareness, and confidence in applying resilience skills.
