dc.descriptionThis article analyzes the 1990s as a liminal period in Ukrainian history and culture, focusing on how collective hope and nostalgia are expressed in women’s cinema created both within that era and by a new generation of female directors. In particular, the films of Kira Muratova (Three Stories, 1997; Letter to America, 1999) and Iryna Tsilyk (Rock. Paper. Grenade, 2022) are used to explore the cultural significance of the 1990s in shaping collective representations of Ukrainian national identity. is the analysis demonstrates that, although Muratova never idealized Soviet ideology—instead exposing its contradictions and degradation—she experienced the collapse of the USSR and the ensuing economic crisis as a profound moral rupture. This disillusionment led to a nostalgia for cultural integrity and inner freedom that, paradoxically, had existed even under totalitarian conditions. In contrast, the defining feature of Tsilyk’s depiction of the 1990s is her hopeful vision of Ukrainian resilience and societal maturation. Unlike Muratova’s nostalgia for the 1990s, Tsilyk’s nostalgia is toward the 1990s—a retrospective construction that frames the decade as the cradle of Ukraine’s transitional culture during the independence era. Beyond examining the dialectic of hope and nostalgia, the article devotes significant attention to cultural trauma as a marker of transitional identity. The article concludes that, despite their differing conceptualizations, both Muratova and Tsilyk treat hope and nostalgia as constitutive forces in collective memory—symbolic bridges between past and present. This interpretation aligns with the cultural sociological approach to collective memory (Alexander, Bartmanski), which is employed as the article’s methodological framework.en_US
dc.description.abstractУ статті проаналізовано кінематографічну репрезентацію 1990-х у творчості Кіри Муратової та Ірини Цілик. Специфіку світогляду режисерок досліджено крізь призму діалектики настроїв надії та ностальгії в їхніх фільмах. Обґрунтовано, що у Муратової 1990-ті постають переважно як епоха колективного розчарування і занепаду цінностей, що спричинила ностальгію за цілісністю культури й внутрішньою свободою особистості. Натомість ностальгія Цілик за 1990-ми має терапевтичний характер і є конструктивним інструментом примирення минулого і сучасності. uk_UA
