Abstract
У статті досліджено етимологію назв поселень Кіровоградської області, заснованих російськими
старообрядцями-розкольниками у XVIII ст.
Description
The article discusses the etymology of the names of Kirovohrad region settlements that were founded by
the Russian Old Believers in the 18th century.
The migration of the Old Believers to the southwest borders served to the best utilitarian interest of the
government of the Russian Empire. Unlike other serfs, the Old Believers were ideal colonists: sober, hardworking,
quiet. In his notes (1774), J. A. Gildenshtedt mentioned such settlements of dissenters and Great Russians in
the territory of modern Kirovohrad region as Zybka, Zlynka, Znamianka, Klyntsi, Kalynivka, Krasnyi Yar,
Pishchanyi Brid, Ploska, Spasivka, and Pokrovske.
Contrary to the generally accepted theory of the origin of similar oikonyms from the names of the earlier
settlements (oikonymic transonimization), in some cases another etymology seems to be more credible. In
particular, the names Ploska and Zlynka indicate that the landscape characteristics were decisive for
naming these settlements, which is reflected in the historical sources of the 18th century. The settlements of
Pishchanyi Brid and Krasnyi Yar were obviously named based on the location characteristics as a result of
lexicalization and onimization.
The origin of oikonyms Znamenka, Spasove and Pokrovske is directly related to the sacral sphere. The
aforesaid oikonyms were derived in the relative function from the names of Christian holidays of Our Lady
of the Sign (Znameniye), the Saviour (Spas) Days, and the Intercession of the Theotokos (Pokrov),
accordingly.
Due to the absence of direct evidences about the origin of such settlements and the general specific of
the nomination of similar names with Christian reasons it is possible to explain these oikonyms by temple
days or by the proper church holidays in the sentinel scopes of which such settlements were built.
However, an obvious phenomenon of oikonymic transonimization can be seen in the names of dissenters’
settlements Zlynka, Klyntsi, and Kalynivka, but there are no convincing arguments to confirm or to oppose
this position.
