Abstract
Developed at the beginning of the 19th century, the image of the flaneur was reflected upon and further developed during the 20th century. At this period Huart, Baudelaire, and Benjamin placed the image in theoretical discourse and justified its cultural significance for the concept of urban culture. The image of the flaneur has received reflection in the focus of neo-Marxist theory. This article attempts to analyse the critical and concept base for the image of the flaneur in neo-Marxist discourse. This is achieved by applying close reading methods to the theoretical texts of modern theorists, such as Priscilla Ferguson, Bruce Mazlish, Rob Shields, and Zygmunt Bauman,in order to provide the peculiarities of neo-Marxist scope in the theoretical discourse. The analysis sheds light on the polyphony of voices, translating their meaning and understanding images throughout the flaneur’s transformation in positivistic, modern, and postmodern periods. As a result, this article calls the application of the neo-Marxist theoretical approach into question within an aesthetic and literary context. The image of the flaneur requires new scope closely connected with urban space, the written word, and identity studies in order to shift from cultural context to a literary one. This will contribute to an overall understanding of flanerie discourse, which requires further reflection.
