dc.descriptionThis article examines the representation of Jews in the Ukrainian reception of the Pilate cycle, focusing on the relationship between the rehabilitation of Pontius Pilate and the construction of Jews as the religious and ethnic Other. For the first time, the Ukrainian reception of the Pilate cycle is analyzed through the prism of mechanisms of Jewish othering. Th e study investigates the corpus of apocryphal and translated Passion narratives preserved in Ukrainian manuscripts, including the Gospel of Nicodemus, Th e Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ, "St. Jerome’s Narrative on Judas the Betrayer of Our Lord Jesus Christ," "Pilate’s Letter to Claudius," "Th e Correspondence of Pilate with Tiberius, the Death of Pilate and the Punishment of the Jews," "Pilate and St Stephen," "Pilate and the Virgin Mary," and related texts derived from Byzantine and Western European traditions. The article demonstrates that the rehabilitation of Pilate relied on a theological transfer of responsibility for Christ’s death from the Roman prefect to the Jewish community. While Ukrainian scribes inherited anti-Jewish narratives, they frequently moderated their most radical implications. Unlike many Western European versions influenced by the Legenda Aurea, Ukrainian apocrypha rarely identify Pilate with the Jews or portray him through established anti-Jewish stereotypes. This tendency is corroborated by iconographic evidence: whereas late medieval art of the Holy Roman Empire oft en depicts Pilate wearing the Judenhut, Ukrainian iconography never developed a stable convention of representing him as Jewish. The article concludes that the Ukrainian reception of the Pilate cycle selectively adapted inherited anti-Jewish narratives while avoiding the complete symbolic identifi cation of Pontius Pilate with the religious and ethnic Other characteristic of many Western European traditions. en_US
dc.description.abstractУ статті проаналізовано рецепцію апокрифів про Понтія Пилата в українських рукописах XV–XVIII ст. від "Євангелія від Никодима" до апокрифічних оповідань пилатівського циклу та пасійних повістей з особливою увагою до механізмів іншування юдеїв. Показано, що апокрифи не лише доповнювали священну історію новими подробицями, а й виконували екзегетичні, катехитичні та полемічні цілі, відображаючи ідеологічні настанови середовища, у якому вони виникали та побутували. Уперше доведено, що реабілітація Понтія Пилата безпосередньо пов’язана з богословським механізмом перенесення відповідальності за смерть Христа на юдейську громаду, однак в українській традиції цей механізм реалізується значно стриманіше, ніж у західноєвропейській. Простежено взаємозв’язок між словесними та візуальними стратегіями конструювання образу юдеїв як релігійного й етнічного Іншого, зокрема через мотив наділення Понтія Пилата зовнішніми ознаками, що асоціювалися з образом юдея в західноєвропейській іконографії.uk_UA
