dc.descriptionGender relations in Ukrainian politics are considered dynamic. Today, we can observe the country in the process of democratic transition, where both authorities and society should be aware of one of the democratic components: gender equality. According to the new law “On Local Elections”, which was adopted in 2015, a party list should include 30 % of same gender candidates. Consequently, it was a push that impacted the behavior of political parties and their voters. This paper is aimed to analyze the outcome of the elections, the results of all-Ukrainian survey, and in-depth interviews with potential candidates and candidates on the local level on the implementation and attitude towards gender quotas and women’s political participation. A common scientific approach for this study to analyze gender relations is the theory of the social construction of gender that is based on the social constructivist’s theory. If we consider gender relations as a constructed concept, we can deconstruct it via the set of tools. Gender quotas are one of the mechanisms that are aimed to overcome established inequality regimes. However, the gender quota is a useful tool to change the current situation in gender relations. Thus this method can be used as a mechanism for the deconstruction of the gender relations. There are three main types of gender quotas: reserved seats, legislated candidate quotas, and voluntary (party) quotas. Ukraine has adopted a legislated candidate quota on the local level. As a result, political parties were obliged to fulfill these requirements to be registered by the Central Election Commission. However, there were exceptions, when party lists did not include 30 % of one gender and were still allowed to be registered. These results are evaluated in the paper, including public opinion on gender quotas in general and the candidates’ experiences in particular.en

Зважаючи на прийняття законодавчої норми на місцевих виборах 2015 року про наявність у списках політичних партій не менше 30 % осіб однієї статі, у статті здійснено аналіз практики дотримання цієї норми політичними партіями та її впливу на збільшення представництва жінок в органах місцевого самоврядування. Для виявлення стану та динаміки громадської думки щодо різних аспектів гендерних відносин про- аналізовано результати низки загальнонаціональних опитувань та виявлено переважно позитивне ставлення до гендерного квотування та збільшення кількості жінок у політичній сфері.uk
