dc.description.abstractThe article considers the genre of adventure story within the system of popular fiction. Rather than treating adventure as an imitation of fine literature, this approach understands this genre as that formed by two of its characteristics – being highly conventional (and oriented towards escapism. Further on, the article considers the ways in which these features help the adventure genre fulfill ideological and didactic functions – namely, teach about the place and the mission of the “in-group” in the world, about the oppositions between “Us” and “Them”. Finally, an example of such ideological messages is considered – the adventure stories in their “classical” form bolstering the ideology of European imperialism in the 19th – early 20th c., as well as a number of “formulas” within the genre supporting different aspects of this ideology.en
