Abstract
The article investigates the questions of genesis of ideas of social state and state of law, historical, political and legal reasons of their development in the second half of the XX century. The rising wave of criticism of liberal market society model, which is not capable to ensure social rights and necessary standards of well-being for all citizens promoted the development of a civil society, socialised democracy, filling the ideas of a social state and state of law with the new substantial moments and also their practical realisation. The author analyses basic concepts that are presented in modern western legal and political science, their main features, interaction of liberal and conservative approaches to the problem of state regulation of economic development. A special attention is given to the number of critical arguments as to the future prospects of social state and state of law.
