Description
One of the prominent Ukrainian modernist writers Mykola Khvyliovyi (Fitiliov, 1893–1933) is well-known for his aesthetic experiments. Master of short prose, he poetically depicts conflict between grey reality and lofty ideals. This conflict produces a specific type of character in Khvyliovyi’s prose. It is tender flaneuse, who makes an attempt to implement in life her dream about “the blue yonder” by immersing her fragile self into brutal reality of the Soviet city. The methodological approach develops the ideas of Janet Wolf, Griselda Pollock, and Elizabeth Wilson, who studied the flâneuse type in literature. The attention will be focused on defining strategies of flanerie and the flâneuse’s interactions with the urban space through representation of public places, itineraries, and the image of the city as a whole seen from the female perspective. The modernist literary imagery will be interpreted within gender context, in particular, from the viewpoint of women’s sensibility to spatial, cultural and social issues.
