The article studies the evolution of Ukrainian dramatic art in 1900-1920-s. The author considers the development of "modernist" and "national, people's" currents in the theatrical life, follows the general trend to creating the national style, disrupted by the authorities' intrusion and ended by artificial establishment of the normative dramatic system. Also the issues of genre evolution are highlighted, in particular, the problems of establishment and development of theatrical amateur activities.
