dc.descriptionThe article presents a review of the ideas on the History of Philosophy of two pragmatic philosophers George Mead (1863–1931) and William James (1842–1910). The attention is focused on the way the philosophy of vitalism of Henri Bergson (1859–1941), which itself is a source of pragmatism, as presented by the mentioned authors. The article examines some of the significant features of the reception of Henri Bergson’s theory within the philosophies of those representatives of the pragmatism. The research is mostly focused on the ideas stated in W. James’s “Pluralistic Universe” and G. Mead’s “Movements of Thought in the Nineteenth Сentury”. For W. James, H. Bergson’s philosophy opens perspectives overshadowed by the traditional logic of identity: the horizons and the “thickness” of the original living synthesis of being, thus vitalism might be seen as “the cure for logicism and the demand for systematic philosophizing”. Overcoming the difficulties caused by the influence of the logic of identity also is an important factor for G. Mead’s philosophy: notions as the constituting elements of experience, as being separated from each other due to not having similarities, caused the statement of incoherence of elements of living perception of existence within the previous philosophical tradition. Philosophizing on the basis of “live experience” opens the possibilities of interpreting the world as an interactive dynamic of processes. Another important contribution of Bergson’s theory to pragmatism is the introduction of the view that notions or ideas are actually developed as practical elements of reasonable cooperation with environment. Both James and Mead give contrast presentations of Bergson’s views, but the opposing instances are different: within James’s interpretation it is specific “intellectualism”, while in Mead’s view it is research science.en
dc.description.abstractУ статті розглянуто історико-філософські ідеї філософів-прагматистів Джорджа Міда (1863–1931) та Вільяма Джеймса (1842–1910). Головним дослідницьким матеріалом слугували праці В. Джеймса "Плюралістичний всесвіт" та "Рухи думки у XIX ст." Дж. Міда. Автор обрав метод зіставлення та аналізу тих теоретичних позицій зазначених представників американського прагматизму, які були переосмислені або уточнені ними під впливом ідей віталізму, висловлених Анрі Берґсоном (1859–1941). Зокрема, йдеться про критичні підходи французького філософа до логіки тотожності, які дозволили В. Джеймсу розширити власну аргументацію на користь тлумачення досвіду в контексті життєво-динамічного та універсально-плюралістичного синтезу. Подолання метафізичної однобічності логіки тотожності мало значну вагу і для Дж. Міда, адже зосередження на поняттєвих розмежуваннях, зафіксованих у дефініціях, створювало значні перепони для живої когерентності інтерактивних аспектів дійсності. Філософські ідеї А. Берґсона значно розширяли можливості інтерпретації картини світу як інтерактивної динаміки процесів, яку обстоював американський прагматист.uk
