Abstract
Description
Ceramic imports and imitations are an important source for reconstruction of the ancient society’s history. They can help to resolve the issues of relative chronology, synchronization, and relationship between alien ethnic population groups. Chechelnyk group of Trypillia culture of the Buh-Dniester interfluves coexisted during the phase CI with Tomashivka, Kaniv, Petreny, Shypentsi, Middle Buh River region, Bahlui, and Bystrytsia groups. According to the imports and imitations, Chechelnyk population had contacts with the first five groups. There are syncretic settlements on the border of Chechelnyk group. Their ceramic systems combine cultural traditions of several local groups. We have such contact zones with Tomashivka, Petreny, and South Buh River groups. Chechelnyk group population mostly had contacts with the population of Tomashivka group (the Southern Buh and the Dnipro interfluves). We have the largest collection of Chechelnyk ceramic imports and imitations at Tomashivka group settlement Maidanetske: 52 instances. To define the “alien” in the ceramic collection it is necessary to combine the following characteristics: 1. clay dough; 2. the method of surface treatment; 3. the ornamental scheme; 4. the form. Imported product differs in all characteristics, whereas imitation does maximum in three. Imports and imitations in Maidanetske are presented by six types of vessels: a bowl; a cup; an amphora; a biconic vessel; a pear-shaped vessel; a crater. Most of them are found in dwellings of the second ellipse of the settlement construction. These products are also known from the other buildings, pit, and the production object: kiln. The largest amount of pottery is represented by big-size vessels (biconic). Obviously, massive appearance of imports at the settlement is the result of the integration of Chechelnyk population to the community of Maidanetske. The arriving population made imitations according to their own traditions. However, this is not the final model that can explain the appearance of imports and imitations in Maidanetske.
