dc.descriptionThe article reveals how the local lexicon in the so-called Southern Kresy preserved today in the dialect of Przemyśl and its environs. It discusses regional differences in the vocabulary of different age groups according to pragmatics and geographical position. The language situation in Przemyśl is specific due to its frontier location and its Polish-Ukrainian language contacts. Regional variation of the language used here has developed a number of characteristics which often have their source in the Ukrainian ground. Researchers either situate it on the periphery of the Malopolski dialect (the eastern line of Rzeszow dialect, where Polish and Ukrainian coexist) or consider it a later mixed dialect. As it was an ethnically diverse area for centuries, it has many similarities with the Southern Kresy dialect that formed on the Ukrainian substratum. Multilingual Przemyśl, where the so-called language of Kresy is still alive, today is the equivalent of old Lviv. Thus, this is a very important city for the presentation of interrelations of the Polish and Ukrainian languages. The primary source used in this research was Z. Kurcowa’s Dictionary of Lwow Dialect before 1939 (Słownik polszczyzny Lwowa i kresów południowo-wschodnich do 1939 r.). It was used as a base for the questionnaires carried out by the author of this article for the dissertation on Przemyśl dialect (Język Przemyśla i okolic, 2012). The research shows that the regional vocabulary of Southern Kresy is still present in the language of people living in Przemysl and its environs, although not always active. The number of words that are typical for Southern Kresy known to the respondents is still significant (~50 %) and shows a great influence of Kresy Polish on the lexicon of Przemyśl. The regional lexicon here is not forgotten and continues to function, especially in informal situations, and the famous Lviv Balak is quite smoothly replaced by the still living Balak of Przemyśl.en
