Abstract
In many jurisdictions there is a single profession of practising lawyers. In the United States for example, whether you wish to be a trial lawyer, a transactional lawyer or a local high street practitioner, you qualify as an "attorney". In England and Wales the position is different. Although their roles are becoming increasingly indistinct we continue to have a split profession with two main categories of practising lawyer, the solicitor and the barrister.
