dc.descriptionThe article analyzes the evolution of political relations between Ukraine and the Republic of South Africa (RSA) within the broader context of the transformation of the global system of international relations. The study identifies key phases of the bilateral dialogue, ranging from the involvement of the Ukrainian SSR in international campaigns against apartheid to the development of Ukraine’s contemporary strategy of engagement with the African continent. Particular attention is devoted to the period of 2022–2025, which witnessed a notable intensification of diplomatic contacts, high-level visits, and political dialogue regarding the Russian-Ukrainian war, as both states recalibrated their foreign-policy priorities under shifting global conditions. The article demonstrates that the RSA’s foreign policy toward the Russian-Ukrainian war manifests as a “policy of balancing,” aimed at preserving strategic autonomy between the West and the Global South and maintaining South Africa’s traditional role as a mediator and normative actor in global governance. It is argued that the current character of Ukrainian–South African relations is shaped by the interplay between the RSA’s political autonomy and Ukraine’s pragmatic, interest-driven diplomacy, resulting in a unique partnership model grounded in the concept of Value-Based Realism. The analysis highlights structural constraints that continue to limit cooperation: the institutional weakness of bilateral mechanisms, South Africa’s increased caution within BRICS, and its longstanding historical ties with Russia. At the same time, three promising areas for future cooperation are identified – humanitarian engagement, food security, and digital development – which together form potential “modules of trust” capable of translating political dialogue into practical, mutually beneficial initiatives. The study concludes that the convergence of these vectors may foster a new quality of South–North partnership anchored in long-term resilience and shared normative interests. The research is based on the analysis of official documents, MFA statements, UN resolutions, data from international organizations, and publications in South African media.en_US
dc.description.abstractУ статті проаналізовано еволюцію політичних відносин між Україною та Південно-Африканською Республікою (ПАР) у контексті трансформації глобальної системи міжнародних відносин. Визначено основні фази двостороннього діалогу — від участі Української РСР у міжнародних кампаніях проти апартеїду до формування сучасної стратегії взаємодії України з країнами Африканського континенту. Особливу увагу приділено періоду 2022–2025 рр., коли відбулася помітна інтенсифікація дипломатичних контактів, візитів високого рівня та політичного діалогу щодо російсько-української війни. Показано, що зовнішня політика Південно-Африканської Республіки стосовно війни реалізується як «політика балансування», спрямована на збереження автономності між Заходом і країнами Глобального Півдня та підтримання традиційної для ПАР ролі посередника й «нормативного реформатора» міжнародної системи. Доведено, що сучасний характер українсько-південноафриканських відносин визначається поєднанням політичної автономії ПАР та прагматичної, гнучкої дипломатії України, що формує унікальний формат партнерства, побудований на концепції ціннісного реалізму. Проаналізовано обмеження розвитку співпраці: інституційна слабкість двосторонніх механізмів, обережність ПАР у межах БРІКС, історичні зв’язки з Росією, а також вплив регіональних лідерських амбіцій Преторії. Окреслено три перспективні напрями подальшої взаємодії (гуманітарний, продовольчий і цифровий), які можуть стати основою «модулів довіри» та перевести політичний діалог у практичну площину. Зроблено висновок, що синергія цих напрямів формує нову якість південно-північного партнерства, орієнтованого на довгострокову взаємовигоду, стійкість та посилення міжнародної суб’єктності України.
