dc.descriptionDuring the past decades, the evidence of such economic behavior as recycling has been revealed in the Middle Paleolithic of Western Europe. It includes different levels of patinization of separate parts of the artifacts, multifunctional usage of separate tools, etc. Refitting of cores and flakes could be useful in identifying reutilization with regard to the site spatial context. The main problem is recognizing the time gap between the artifact reuse that distinguishes reutilization from the simultaneous multifunctional purpose of a tool or from its reshaping effect. Based on ethnological studies, this activity could have scheduled the character in the same industrial tradition, or just be a lithic scavenging by different cultural groups. At archaeological sites, the level of reutilization, in the first place, depends on the raw material availability, the applied lithic technology, and the occupation pattern. Some evidence of this process may be traced in Denticulate Mousterian of Andriyivka 4 site in Central Ukraine. The peculiarities of the site topography, accumulation of the cultural layer and the lithic industry suit well the basic conditions of the reutilization activity. Despite restricting criteria to recognize the reutilized artifacts by intensive taphonomic processes at the site, such one may be seen in multifunctional usage of “chopping-like” tools made on small flint nodules. The location of working elements opposite each other hints to successive utilization of the artifacts, initially as hammers and retouchers, then as cores and/or end-scrapers/chopping tools whose blunted edges might have been served as retouchers or as backs for hammering once again. This type of evidence witnesses predetermined and scheduled technological strategies employed by late Neanderthals.en
