This article explores the core mechanisms of control in the dystopian novels "1984" by George Orwell and "Julia" by Sandra Newman. It investigates how totalitarian regimes exercise power over individuals through surveillance, ideological conditioning, linguistic manipulation, and bodily discipline. Drawing on the theoretical frameworks of Michel Foucault and Erich Fromm, the article compares how both novels depict internalised control, loss of autonomy, and gendered dimensions of oppression. The analysis reveals how even the most intrusive regimes fail to suppress human desire, memory, and resistance completely.
