The article presents the theoretical principles and procedure of free listing that is not referred to in the publications in Ukrainian. At the same time, there is extensive literature on free listing surveys in English. Our interpretation of the organization and implementation of free listing is built upon both the review of the literary sources and the practical experience obtained in ‘Enhancing Torture Survivor Mental Health Services: A qualitative study of mental health and psychosocial problems among IDP and veteran families in eastern Ukraine’ Project carried out jointly by the NaUKMA and Johns Hopkins University, as well as in the NaUKMA and UNICEF Project “Comprehensive psycho social support and assistance to mobile team members who work in the ‘grey zone”. The aim of this survey is to promote free listing within the Ukrainian scientific environment and to give a detailed description of its procedure. In the first place, this can be of interest to anthropologists, linguists and psychologists. In order to assure the reliability of the other data collection procedures it is important to identify the cultural domain and to specify its content by the means of free listing. Therefore, it is productive to apply it in the framework of a comprehensive research of a certain phenomenon. The successive free listing is applied to obtain additional data for each domain element. In this case the standard free listing results are used as a prompt for additional free listings. Free listing is an extremely flexible procedure that can be used in individual and group interviews; responses can be provided both in writing and orally; the survey can be carried out by a single researcher or a research team. The researcher can ask the respondents oral questions or offer a stimulus material; respondents can be invited to discuss and analyze the obtained data in various ways. The credibility and completeness of the lists collected within the field stage of the survey depend on the qualified and dedicated interviewers who should establish a psychological contact with respondents and encourage them to provide a succinct answer. Modified interview techniques that include simulation and playing elements or team work elements seem to be effective to enhance the respondents’ mental activities.en
