Abstract
Description
The article offers a comparative analysis of two different approaches of American pragmatist philosophers William James and George Mead to philosophical absolutism of Georg Hegel. the attention is focused on the concepts of hypothesis, evolutionism, humanitarian and scientific practices. James emphasizes an impressionistic and common sense approach of Hegel’s theorizing: it is mostly rooted in and based on vision and impression of existence then its "dialectical thought structure". Two fundamental features of Hegel’s philosophy in G. Mead’s version are its evolutionary and social orientations manifested within history of social institutions, evolutionary model of thought development and the social nature of the human existence which is of a special interest to the social pragmatism of G. Mead himself. According to Mead Hegel as the most influential of the romantic philosophers made a significant impact on development of the evolutionary type of philosophical interpretations of being: the introduction of the conception of the dynamic structure of thinking and its elements into the field of intellectual practices of the early 19th century is one of the greatest achievements of the romantic philosophy altogether as scientific conceptions of that period were mostly static. the possibilities to grasp "dialectical" and thus paradoxical from the standpoint of the previous philosophical tradition nature of processes and phenomena fulfilled with inner contradictions is a significant feature of Hegel’s philosophy for W. James and G. Mead. Another unifying element in James’s and Mead’s approach to the evaluation of Hegel’s philosophical heritage is comparing its fundamental components to the wider context of contemporary research practices. While James makes a statement of Hegel’s theory scientific potential as quite limited Mead presents an argumentation for the stronger application potential of slightly modified dialectical model within research practices.
