Description
Military social work in the US involves direct practice; policy and administrative activities; and
advocacy including providing prevention, treatment, and rehabilitative services to service members,
veterans, their families, and their communities. In addition, military social workers develop and advance
programs, policies, and procedures to improve the quality of life for clients and their families in diverse
communities. Military social workers provide assistance and treatment in the transition from military to veteran status, including a continuum of care and services for military personnel and their families. But the
functions of military social workers vary in different agencies that belong to the US Armed Forces, the US
Department of Defense, or the US Department of Veterans Affairs.
Military social workers have special requirements for their qualification such as US citizenship;
experience in social work in the United States; Master’s degree in social work at a school accredited by the
Council of Social Work Education; receiving clinical supervision of a social worker for at least two years;
a license or a certificate of clinical social worker; age from 18 to 41 years, etc. Their practice is regulated
by the National Association of Social Workers Standards for Social Work Practice with Service members,
Veterans and their Families. A very important issue for their practice is also knowledge of military culture
and ethics. Basic ethical principles of military social work, declared the United States Armed Forces,
include honesty, loyalty, responsibility, accountability, fairness, caring, respect, respect for promises,
responsible community, striving for perfection. The Uniformed Code of Military Justice states that the
military (if it is necessary) should sacrifice life and health for general wellbeing.
