Abstract
У цій статті розглянуто основні аспекти політики розбудови казахстанської політичної нації
протягом усього періоду незалежності Казахстану в контексті їхнього співвідношення з основними теоретико-методологічними положеннями примордіалізму та конструктивізму як ключових наукових підходів у рамках етнополітології. Автор звертає увагу як на важливість вищезазначених
напрямів етнополітологічних досліджень у цілому, так і на рівень застосовності їх до дослідження
процесу розбудови нації в сучасному Казахстані.
Description
This article purports to highlight the essential issues relevant for analyzing and evaluating the theory
and praxis of contemporary nation-building in the Republic of Kazakhstan from 1991 on in view of
the latter’s correlation with the basic theoretical suppositions of both primordialism and constructivism
as highly influential approaches in the field of contemporary ethno-political studies. The author aims to
present a cohesive and thorough account of the main theoretical claims presented by both primordialists and their constructivist opponents with the aim to subsequently find out whether the effective practice
of the Kazakhstan authorities in the context of nation-building might verify the former’s validity.
Consequently, this article is structured as follows. In the introductory section, a generic perspective on
the subject matter is provided, with a specific focus on the role of theoretical models in the process of nation-
building. The second section encompasses a brief review of the relevant literature, thus shedding light
on the main issues to be confronted in the course of this research. The further discussion reveals the role
of the nation-state as a regulator of ethnic and national identities within its territorially determined sovereign
space, with properly assessing both strengths and weaknesses of primordialism and constructivism as
the main approaches.
The third section refers to methodologies of nation-building in the Republic of Kazakhstan since 1991,
which are presented as predicated on pragmatic considerations of national consolidations as well as upon
the theoretical formulations developed and presented by President Nursultan Nazarbayev in the course of
the latter’s policy making activities. In particular, the duality of the Kazakhstan political nation and the
Kazakh ethnicity (ethnic nation) is presented as reflecting the complex circumstances under which the
Kazakhstan authorities have had to operate in regard of nation-building.
The concluding section provides due remarks as to further directions of the subsequent research on the
present research problem.
