Abstract
Description
Tendency to depersonalize knowledge and thinking was a feature of the majority of representatives or sympathizers of structuralism. The author shows that this trend did not actually discredit biographic investigations as a full-fledged element of history of philosophy, but rather cured biographical approach of some old and essential defects, thereby making it more effective. In this context, threats to biographic research posed by the «death of the author» thesis proposed by Roland Barthes receive special attention. It is generally believed that one of the most determined conceptual supporters of Barthes' on the topic was such an influential French thinker of the 20th century as Michel Foucault. Considering huge importance of Foucault's views for contemporary humanities, the author analyses some focal aspects of his personality and heritage. Analyzing a number of works, written by Foucault at various stages in his life, the author shows that this philosopher did not suggest a total disappearance of the author's figure. Foucault just established the fact that any author experiences a symbolic death once he or she has finished writing some text. However, the writing of a new text symbolizes his or her rebirth in a new role. It is made evident that, in fact, the «death of the author» thesis does not eliminate biographic aspect from history of philosophy, but rather warns a biographer against a widespread error of reductive, one-sided interpretation of a biography's hero. The author shows that Foucault himself made numerous theoretical assertions and took practical steps in order to make a biographic look at him impossible. Still, interest to his personality has not been fading for decades. In this aspect his path is one of the striking examples of the fundamental paradox immanent to biographies of many true philosophers: they try to transcend the limits of their own subjectivity as much as they can, thereby obtaining a rare privilege which is interest to their own subjectivity from others.
