Один із парадоксів полягає в тому, що підтримка 1 /5 електорату утримує керівництво КПУ від модернізації. Водночас СПУ (принаймні, їі керівництво) рухається ближче до соціал-демократії і розвиває зв'язки з рядом центристських і навіть правоцентристських сил. Одним із її конкурентів є СДПУ(о), яка насправді представляє інтереси олігархів і може дискредитувати в Украї- ні саму ідею соціал-демократії.The article analyzes the further divergence between Ukrainian Communists and Socialists after the Left lost the 1999 presidential elections. The paradox is that support of around 1 / 5 of electorate prevents Communist leadership from modernization. At the same time, the Socialists (at least their leadership) are moving closer to Social Democracy and are building ties with some Center and even Right-Center forces.
