Феномену людської гідності надано статус найвищої соціальної цінності, яка, своєю чергою, свідчить про значущість людини для суспільства як такої. Основний акцент у статті зроблено на природно-правовому підході до феномену людської гідності, який закріплено в основних міжнародних актах з прав людини.The article examines the concept of human dignity in the historical and philosophical aspects and shows a causal link between different eras of understanding human dignity and its place in law. The problem of such a complex and multifaceted phenomenon as human dignity has been attracting great attention of mankind for centuries. Today it is also quite urgent because of the dramatic changes of the contemporary Ukrainian society. The last revolution was even called “Revolution of dignity”. The phenomenon of human dignity has a status of the highest social value which indicates the importance of a human being itself. The article is focused on a natural law approach to the phenomenon of human dignity, which is reflected in major international instruments on human rights. This approach has been developed by numerous philosophers and scientists, Thomas Aquinas, John Locke, and Petro Rabinovych among them. The concept of human dignity had played a major role in the development of documents on human rights. For example, the preparatory documents to the text of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights provide references to the understanding of human dignity as the basis of all natural rights. Delegations of some countries assess dignity as a basis or foundation of human rights, while some others see it as a basis of equality of all people, and that is the equality of human rights. However, it has not been included into the text of the document so explicitly.
