The definition and history« s genesis of referendum« s institution has been shortly revealed. The first referendum in the world was held in Switzerland in 1439. The basic types of the Swiss referendum at the federal level are explored. It is shown that the referendum in Switzerland is a real community»s influence on the state policy, possibilities of using the Swiss experience for Ukraine. For comparison, in Ukraine at the allukrainian level in 1991-2005 2 référendums have been held. The basic types of the Ukrainian referendum at the allukrainian level are explored: the imperative and consultative rеfеrendums. The Allukrainian referendum on April, 16, 2000 has been analyzed.На основі сучасного розуміння сутності інституту референдуму досліджено головні способи винесення питань на федеральний референдум у Швейцарії.
