У ретроспекції та проспекції виявлено мовний феномен як підставу історичного розвитку сучасного рити.The article investigates the relations of the structures of meaning of the modern Ukrainian linguistic unit пити and its oldest lexical equivalent, Proto-Slavic *piti. Such generative phenomena as semantic foundation of their historical development are traced in retrospective and prospective connections. The study asserts that between the meaning of the modern Ukrainian language units пити and the meaning of its oldest lexical equivalent Proto-Slavic *piti there is a historical connection, and the modern and old meanings have a common origin. So the goal is not only to describe the relationships between contemporary Ukrainian and ancient Slavonic meanings but also to determine their specific structures and detect semantic grounds on which they are based. In solving the problems that arise from the relationship of historically remote meanings of the Ukrainian пити and Proto-Slavic *piti, it is important to prime theoretical and practical achievements of comparative and historical linguistics, lexicology, and lexicography methodology. Lexicographical interpretation of the researched meaning пити outlines the nature of its structure and place in the semantic system of the modern Ukrainian literary language. As generative phenomenon, the Indo-European meaning ‘пити’ determines the semantic foundation of interaction of the retrospection meaning of the modern Ukrainian and prospecting meaning of Proto-Slavic.
