It reflects on the reasons for the lack of dialogue between postcolonial critique and post-communist studies. In order to provide a sound reflection on this problem, the article presents an overview of both limitations and possibilities of these two approaches – postcolonialism and postcommunism – if one would compare them as research methodologies. Furthermore, it suggests the concept of ‘internal colonization’ as the most productive way for conceptualizing the diversity of different colonial experiences of Ukraine. The author believes that an application of postcolonial approaches to the studies of political phenomena and processes in postcommunist Ukraine can be productive if it follows some methodological remarks. First of all, it concerns the uses of the term ‘colony’ in relation to the Ukrainian territory of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union. The author endorses David Chioni Moore’s idea for a full global postcolonial critique; however, the author of this article emphasizes the necessity to consider the absence of the racial component, crucial for classical postcolonial studies, in the Russo-Soviet colonialism in Ukraine when conducting studies in this region. Also it is necessary to consider the neocolonial nature of the Russian foreign policy towards Ukraine at least until the Revolution of Dignity began, which can be compared to the neocolonial presence of the Soviet Union in Central European countries, the members of the Communist Bloc, before the so-called ‘velvet’ revolutions. If these aspects are taken and integrated into a research frame, they can play an important role for a deeper study into the consequences of the Russian (neo)colonial dominance, especially when applied to researching the processes of formation and development of post-Soviet hybrid identities.У статті йдеться про можливість застосування постколоніальної методології до політичних досліджень широкого спектра процесів на теренах посткомуністичної України. Розглянуто основні дискусії щодо можливостей та обмежень у взаємодії цих двох напрямів – постколоніалізму та посткомунізму – як методологій дослідження.
