The Ukrainian sociolinguistics, which in Soviet times could not develop normally due to ideological restrictions, nowadays has all the possibilities for a full-fledged development. One of its key figures is Larysa Masenko, known for her work on the analysis of the language situation in Ukraine, the problems of bilingualism, and language policy. This year she celebrates her anniversary.
Purpose. The purpose of the article is to cover the academic achievements of L. Masenko, to analyze the basic principles of her sociolinguistic conception, and to characterize the influence of her ideas on the language policy in modern Ukraine.
Methods. The study uses biographical methods, methods of analyzing linguistic literature, and generalization of basic ideas.
Results. L. Masenko touches upon all the main problems of the functioning of the Ukrainian language. She was one of the first researchers to introduce the major categories of sociolinguistics (language situation, language conflict, language resistance, language policy) into the Ukrainian context. Describing modern language processes, the researcher reproduces their historical background, analyzes in the light of socio-cultural and psycholinguistic approaches. Among the main problems that arise relating to the Ukrainian language, L. Masenko indicates an undermined demographic base, narrowed communicative functions, russification at various language levels, and a significant prevalence of surzhyk. The language situation in Ukraine is aggravated by the fact that for all 27 years of independence, the political elite has not implemented a purposeful language policy that would strengthen the position of Ukrainian.
Discussion. The language policy program offered by L. Masenko includes the following main points: 1) the genuine implementation of the state status of Ukrainian; 2) the development of the Ukrainian-language cultural environment; 3) language awareness and language resistance training; 4) the national elite formation. These and other ideas of L. Masenko have found their legislative embodiment.

In modern linguistics, the issues of the linguo-person are of relevance to the study, since they are aimed at establishing a number of significant values for the realization of a separate and collective linguistic personality (mono-^ polylinguo-person). They touch upon the status of such personalities, levels of their implementation, the clarification of integrity, etc. The study combines in-depth consideration of the functional level of the monolinguo-person with the analysis of speech and communicative behavioral samples, as well as the establishment of correlation of the patterns of speech behavior with the corresponding discursive practices of the monolinguo-person. The above-mentioned approach motivates the relevance of the study of speech- behavioral samples of the monolinguo-person.
The research of the monolinguo-person (its structure, status, etc.) is related to the issues of communicative, cognitive, functional, and synergetic linguistics; it is in the sphere of important directions of nominative-existential (functional-cognitive or post-soviet) lingual paradigms, since its methodological basis provides the study of categories of the linguo-person, units, and levels.
Purpose. The aim is to establish the regularities of the speech-behavioral expression of the monolinguo-person in folklore and artistic-discursive practices with the establishment of the functional load of speech-behavioral patterns in certain axiological situations.
Methods. The analysis of speech-behavioral samples in folklore and artistic-belletristic practices has been implemented with the use of case-oriented (formation of a holistic experimentalresearch body of the monolinguo-person, person-modeling methods; the methods of presupposition and the discourse analysis were partly used.
Results. The language-behavioral measurements of the monolinguo-person are determined by the following factors: 1) social and ethical norms; 2) correlation and / or non-correlation of the speech models of linguistic social medium and monolinguo- person; 3) moral and regulatory durability; 4) the adequacy of speech-behavioral manifestations in axiological situations; 5) adherence to communicative strategies and tactics in accordance with the social-role statuses, the areas of speech self-expression of the monolinguo-person.
Discussion. The speech-behavioral realization of the mono- and polylinguo-person is motivated by the established patterns of lingual-social relations, that accumulate in themselves the samples of pre-Christian and Christian beliefs, reflected in numerous fairy tales, myths and legends. Language-behavioral manifestations of the monolinguo-person are consistently expressed in different communicative strategies and tactics and are also revealed in relevant speech acts. Observance of tolerance by the monolinguo-person, cooperation or other principles of communication are based on traditions, the depth and motivation of an axiological and other situations, the study and analysis of which require not only consistent inventory (axiological occurrences of “Brotherhood”) are taken into account.

The renaming of population areas in Ukraine within the framework of the “decommunization law” took place with distinct features of the mental confrontation, which was caused by the duality of ideological categories, in particular, the category “own - alien”. Therefore, the same events and the facts depending on the ideological views of the speaker were represented by different names. The peculiarities of the choice and use of these names and their ability to reflect the evaluative attitude of the opponent are of special interest to the researchers and determine the relevance of the chosen direction of the study.
Purpose. The purpose is to investigate the psycholinguistic peculiarities of the linguo-mental representation of the evaluative attitude towards the opponent in the context of the renaming discourse.
Methods. Among the general scientific methods, the method of direct observation was chosen during the research, which helped to identify the main extralingual factors of the renaming discourse. Contextual-interpretative and descriptive methods were selected from the main philological ones, which provided an opportunity to identify lexemes used to express the evaluative attitude to the opponent and to make the description of them.
Results. The renaming campaign was mainly based on the confrontation “new - old”. The “new” is introduced by the concept “Ukrainian”, while the “old” is represented by two categories - a) the preservation of the Soviet name; b) the return of the imperial one. The first category is represented by markers, expressed with the help of such lexemes as “holiness”, “patronage of the saint”, “patronage”, “guard”, “Christianity”. The second category includes the lexemes that in the speaker’s consciousness have only negative connotations: “war”, “Russian world”, “aggression”, “terrorism”, “weapon”, “occupation”, “murder”, “death”, “automatic weapons”, “separatism”, “empire”, “cruelty”, “captivity”, “imperial trace”.
Discussion (conclusions and perspectives). Thus, linguistic units become an active means of manipulating human consciousness during socio-political confrontation; language actively reacts to the political processes by the appearance of a significant number of neologisms and occasionalisms, as well as an increase in the number of lexical meanings of ready-made nominative units.; The renaming of population areas in Ukraine within the framework of the “decommunization law” took place with distinct features of the mental confrontation, which was caused by the duality of ideological categories, in particular, the category “own - alien”. dc.contributor.author: Кліщевська, Майя
Most recently, the evolution of human society has brought about the major changes in the initiation of communication processes and an eruptive revolution of information and communication technologies. At present, Ukrainian-language marketing discourse represents a separate communicative milieu made up of oral and written varieties with various characteristics regarding their genres and styles. Well-known Ukrainian linguists, such as F. S. Batsevych, A. D. Bielova, T. R. Kyiak, V. I. Karazyk, K. Ia. Kusko, H. H. Pocheptsov, O. O. Selivanova or N. V. Slukhai, as well as international scholars such as J. Searle, J. Austin, E. Burn, T. van Dijk, or E. Gross have examined and described specific elements of the theory of verbal communication, of the text as a tool of communication, and the role of discourse in the systems of modern communication.
Purpose. In this study, we are examining communication tactics in texts that belong to the sphere of Ukrainian-language marketing discourse, largely referring to Ukrainian web resources. We aim to offer a multifaceted study of communication acts, their strategies, and tactics, particularly inasmuch as they are realized in the sphere of the Internet communication. The study refers to those current trends in linguistics that pay increasing attention to the search of models which describe mechanisms of the impact exerted on addressees in the course of verbal communication.
Methods. Our largely descriptive study is based on two methods of the external interpretation of marketing discourse, namely the sociological and the logical-psychological approach.
Sociological approaches enable us to shed light on the normative, stylistic and historical aspects of marketing discourse as well as the study of its lexical makeup, etc. One of the approaches that are particularly useful with regard to the study of Ukrainian marketing discourse, with its plethora of English and American loans, is that of “Words and Things” (“Wörter und Sachen” as introduced by H. Schuchardt and R. Mehringer), which is interested in the history of words combined with the signified concepts and extralinguistic objects and notions that they refer to.
Logical-psychological approaches are interesting for us inasmuch as they help examin the semantic connection of linguistic units and mental categories (the interrelation of the word and the signified, the sentence and the proposition, topic and comment (rheme) structures, semantic deep structures of sentences, utterances, and texts).
Results. Regarding pragmatic aspects, the sender (speaker, or, in our context, the marketing expert) uses linguistic codes to steer the process of marketing communication while preparing and initiating it, controlling its duration and finalization, the schemes of interaction with the addressee, and the topics. Inasmuch as all participants of marketing communication are persons with particular social, psychological, cognitive, and ideological characteristics, the communication tactics of positioning as practiced in marketing discourse aims to exert impact on the “standpoints” of clients to the benefit of various organizations or enterprises. The clients’ “standpoints” are largely based on models of “empathy” to which the addressees ascribe cognitive and emotional meaning to the information that has been to a significant degree shaped by marketing experts. A crucial problem of marketing discourse is the search for “a common language” as a marker of successful dialogical (or, in some cases, monological) cooperation: the selection of linguistic items that are most appropriate for rendering the necessary information; the selection of the appropriate “tone”, and the creation of an atmosphere that supports the interaction between the participants of communication. One of the most characteristic features of Ukrainian marketing discourse and its communication tactics of positioning is the use of the Russian language, which to a great degree continues former Soviet language practices. As large parts of the Russianized population of Ukraine - mostly that of larger cities - are used to Russian professional jargons in the sphere of business, Ukrainian marketing experts often develop specific bilingual communication tactics in marketing discourse.
Aside from those problems of bilingualism, marketing experts are generally interested in manipulating their clients, and they are well aware of the fact that their efficiency depends on their command of the laws and technologies of manipulative communication (which is an inevitable and not necessarily negative element of marketing communication). Cognitive linguistics studies the interrelations between cognitive and linguistic structures; it also examines in which ways the language is used to achieve efficiency in strategies of positioning. In our study, we use cognitive models to describe the specific features of Ukrainian marketing discourse and its manipulative aspects.
Discussion. The study aims to describe the theoretical and methodological foundations of the conceptual principles that are characteristic of efficient communication strategies and tactics in marketing discourse. Efficiency in marketing discourse is based on communication strategies of positioning and their linguistic realization. Marketing experts work on efficient ways of preparing their interaction with clients (suggesting dialogue-oriented propositions that are based on feedback relations), initiating this interaction (in selecting appropriate linguistic items that influence the course of communication in pragmatic ways), trying to control the duration of the interaction (depending on specific purposes, marketing programs, and commercial projects), and finalizing this interaction (aiming at successfully accomplishing the marketing actions). They attempt to exert impact on further mechanisms of interrelation with their addressees (depending on the efficiency of their communication and the programs of their commercial projects) and to retain their topic in broader discourse structures with an eye to ongoing marketing processes (this is one of the general aims of many marketing projects).
In our study, we describe the specifics of these general features in Ukrainian marketing discourse and focus on its bilingual aspects.

The issue of protecting the state language remains unresolved after the declaration of independence of Ukraine. Actually, Ukrainian society remains bilingual as in the times of the USSR, where the Russian language was able to replace the state language without any legal and practical difficulties. The language consciousness has appeared only after the Revolution of Dignity and with the beginning of Russian aggression in Ukraine. However, the issue of Ukrainian-Russian bilingualism is more often a subject of debate than an in-depth sociolinguistic research.
Purpose. The aims of this article are to show the motivation of choosing the language in a particular communication situation and to identify causes of language acquisition of non-state language, which has an important position in the state.
Methods. Fragments of own sociolinguistic studies on multilingualism in Ukraine, where the author is interested only in answers related to the Russian and Ukrainian languages, their places of languages learning/ acquisition, places of use of these languages, as well as linguistic behavior during verbal and non-verbal communication with the surrounding environment.
Results. Almost every third respondent chose two languages to be used on the radio and television, as well as non-verbal forms of communication. This tendency is observed in Ukrainian and Russian-language questionnaires, which suggests that the language selection can be corrected through the state policy.
Discussion. Ukraine should establish a state policy of the Ukrainian language dominance in all spheres to provide its comprehensive development. Particular attention should be focused to those citizens who want to learn the Ukrainian language. In order to achieve this, special programs should be created and appropriate textbooks should be published.

Much research has been devoted to the problem of language situation. But in this study it has been analyzed on the basis of the newest sociolinguistic survey in 2017. The article “Modern language situation (on the basis of the 2017 survey)” deals with the problem of Ukrainians’ attitude to the Ukrainian and Russian languages and their usage in everyday life.
Purpose. The purpose of this paper is to identify the attitude of Ukrainians to the language problems and analyze their thoughts on the usage of the Ukrainian and Russian languages in the future.
Methods. The research was conducted by analyzing the results of surveys that were distributed among 2007 respondents across the whole country, except for the territories that are out of control of Ukrainian government. The method of interview was used to collect these data.
Results. The results have shown that bilingualism and diglossia exist in Ukraine. However, the main problem is that most people do not understand the nature of not only language conflicts but also the political ones. The evidences of this are the ambiguous and contradictory answers on many questions. The paper considers the fact that now people do not resist the legislative consolidation of various provisions regarding the Ukrainian language. So the task of Ukrainian language policy is to increase the amount of the Ukrainian language.
Discussion. We can conclude that the Ukrainian language will become the main one in all spheres of communication in the future if society and government understand the essence of language problems and try to force out the Russian language of formal and informal communication. As a result, Ukrainian will replace it as it must be the state language.

The mass survey was conducted as a part of the project «Ethnolinguistic conflicts, linguistic politics and contact situations in post-Soviet Ukraine and Russia» with support of the Volkswagen Foundation. Purpose. The article analyses the results of mass survey on the topic linguistic situation in Ukraine. The research was aimed to understand to what extent the state language policy in the area of mass media and cultural sphere meets the expectations of the citizens of Ukraine.
Methods. Individual face-to-face interviews with 2007 respondents were conducted between February 2nd and Fenruary 10th, 2017 in all regions of Ukraine, except for territories not controlled by the Ukrainian authorities.
Results. The results of the interviews showed that the language is an important factor only for choosing a book or a newspaper. It does not make any difference when selecting a radio or television programs; the least attention is paid to the language of the movies. On the other hand, not always the actual choice of the language of a media product depends on the language preferences of the person - this choice is also influenced by the content, quality, authorship, political orientation, at last the banal presence/absence of the necessary product in the preference language.
Discussion. The situation with the preferences of Ukrainians in the media and culture reflects the linguistic choices of the Ukrainians as a whole. This situation, first, emphasizes the practice of bilingual communication in the country, and second, it reveals the problem of uncertain linguistic self-identification of one third of Ukrainians. It also underlines regionally marked attitude towards the strategy of language policy: the Western part of the country prefers the Ukrainian language, South - the Russian language, and Center and North take intermediate positions. Population of the traditionally Russian-speaking East provided quite contradictory answers to the questions about language preferences, often limited to the reactions “indifferent to me” or “difficult to answer”.

Our surveys showed that the evolution of language is strongly influenced by the combination of factors, some of which are the result of external historical events that have occurred locally or internationally, while others still occur due to the ongoing search of the speaker to find a way of expressing his/her thoughts.
Purpose. This article presents the results of the survey that allow us to clarify the role of different factors in a situation when bilingual speakers have to choose their language of communication. Our study is the continuation of previous projects in which we have identified the factors that might influence the choice of language in the Ukrainian-Russian language environment formed over a long period of time in Vinnytsia and Vinnytsia region.
Methods. In the current study, we analyze the results of the survey where 560 students were asked different questions about their mother tongue, the language of communication in different situations, a number of questions concerning the use of Ukrainian and Russian in their families, with their friends, at school, etc. In addition, the respondents were asked to identify the level of language tolerance. All these respondents live in the city of Vinnytsia (Central Ukraine, 370 thousand people), and in the little towns Lypovets’ and Tul’chyn. The target group of our survey participants consisted mainly of 14-18-year students.
Our results showed asymmetrical nature of the relationship between the two groups of speakers. At first glance, both groups are bilingual, but their language use and attitude are different depending on their primary/dominant language. Basically, Ukrainian speakers tend to easily switch from language to language and avoid conflicting situations, although their answers demonstrate that they feel psychological discomfort because of the Russian speakers’ persistence on the language of conversation. In contrast, most Russian speakers are more resilient on the use of their own language, prefer to remain in their circle of communication and do not want to learn Ukrainian. These behavioral patterns are obvious from their answers to the survey questions related to the lack of Ukrainian environment, low prestige of the Ukrainian language, and reluctance to stand out from their environment due to communication in Ukrainian.

The article highlights the pecularities of language legislation in three PostSoviet countries: Ukraine, Georgia, and Moldova. The historical perspective of language policies discourse is defined from the times of the Soviet Union collapse. Special attention has been paid to the description of constitutional statuses of the state languages, recently adopted laws and bills, to the role of constitutional courts in language conflicts regulation.
Purpose of this research is to analyse the current language legislation in Ukraine, Georgia, and Moldova and examine the peculiarities of language policies in these countries. As material for the research, we use the texts of laws and bills on language issues and mass-media texts that show public reaction to these laws. Special attention has also been paid to cultural and historical peculiarities of language policies formation.
Methods. Methodological base of this article are as follows: language policy and language planning theory, language management theory and critical discourse-analysis approach towards language policy. In the frame of these theories, it is underlined that language policy has different stages - creation of the policies, its interpretation and implementation through concrete legislative mechanisms.
Results. Therefore, in this article, we examined the main legislative pecularities of language conflict regulation in contemporary Ukraine, Georgia, and Moldova. Many common features have been observed in language policies of the above-mentioned countries. First of all, we notice attempts to introduce new language laws or make amendments into old ones. Secondly, problematic implementation of the legislative decisions is related to financial problems; as a result, it leads to lack of real legislative mechanisms of language conflict regulation and to state control of language legislation implementation. Thirdly, in these countries different actors (parliaments, constitutional courts, political parties, and civic activist organizations) are fighting for power in general, and for influence on language policies in particular.
Discussion. In this article, we focus our attention on the issues of state language functioning in different spheres of public life. Furthermore, the perspectives of our research are the issues of minority languages protection and development, the aspect of languages and language policies conceptualisation in the above-mentioned countries.

However, the paronymic attraction in poetic texts is not only a means of expressiveness, but primarily a representative of the creative individual and author's linguistic activity. Neologisms also are the exponents of the author's individual speech activity. The aim of our article is analysis of Ihor Pavliuk's neologisms with paronymic components.
In the research author used generally scientific methods (induction, deduction). For the analyzing of semantics and functions of the neologisms, such special methods as descriptive- analytical, textual, and component analysis were used.
The results of the research have showT that in I. Pavliuk’s poetic language, there are two types of paronymic attraction: 1) when the attractive pair consists of a neologism and a usual word; 2) when paronyms function as equal components of innovation. It is noteworthy that I. Pavliuk often introduces a paronymic pair of neologisms, motivated by their own names. The distinctive paronymic attraction performs a characterization function. The author’s epithets with paronymic components present a large group of I. Pavliuk's neologisms. In the compound words, each paronymic component has not eigenvalue, because semantics of the components is united. The prospects for further research are the possibility of a comparative analysis of neologisms with paronymic components in the modern Ukrainian poetry.
The perspectives of further studies are the comparable analysis of neologisms with paronymic components in different poetries of XX-XXI centuries; research of correlation of homonymic and paromymic attraction in the neologisms; and description of synonyms, antonyms, homonyms as components of innovations.
