Abstract
Description
The article concerns with the history of development of studies of research methodology. The author analyzes the evolution of scientific methods, from the main approaches to this problem taken by Aristotle, to Francis Bacon, to René Descartes, to Ernst Mach, to Karl Popper. Their works make the basis to shown the impact of industrialization and development of science on the changes in research methods. In addition, a special attention is paid to studies of the structural elements of research methodology. The article provides a detailed analysis of tree concepts of structure of research methodology: Thomas Kuhn’s paradigm, Michel Foucault’s episteme, and Imre Lakatos’ research programme. According to Kuhn, paradigm is a set of the main concepts and research practices of a scientific discipline during any particular period of time. The paradigm may contain rules which are not common for the entire scientific field. Michel Foucault’s episteme is a priori historical and it determines various forms of explanations and theories within a particular epoch. There are three main episteme: the episteme of the Renaissance, the classical episteme, and the modern episteme. Imre Lakatos introduces his own approach to the structure of scientific knowledge. Scientists conduct their studies within a framework which defines the direction of research. According to Lakatos, this framework is called the research programme. Taking into account Imre Lakatos’ approach, the author considers principles (key research assumptions) and rules (guidelines for research activities), divided into two modalities (negative heuristics and positive heuristics) as structural units of the research methodology. The above structural elements of methodology (principles, negative heuristics, and positive heuristic) can be used as the theoretical framework in the studies of research methodology, including inquiries into peculiarities of the social research.
