dc.description	The oeuvre by Emmanuel Levinas (1906–1995) gives a number of options to read and interpret his philosophical project, which could be labeled as phenomenology, metaphysics, ethics, or even poststructuralism. Ongoing debates around the topic continuously reshape it. Overall, scholars agree that Levinas’s most notable piece of work is “Totality and Infinity”, in which he tries to establish a new metaphysics and ethics. Very often Levinas’s philosophy is referred to as merely ethics. However, the question is whether an alternative reading would be impossible. Levinas does not clearly separates metaphysics from ethics and vice versa. They are combined in such a way that both of them turn out to be enriched in the matter of concepts and arguments. Therefore, Levinas’s ethics can be fairly described as “metaphysical ethics” or “ethics of ethics,” as it does not impose any imperative. Yet it lacks a practical dimension and appears to be a vague critique of violence. On the other hand, feminist readers of Levinas question his phenomenology of Eros, which is one of the basic points of his early works, as well as “Totality and Infinity”, for being unethical and strictly metaphysical. As a result, Levinas’s notion of other and otherness is under threat of limitedness in a sense of their applicability. It is hard to ignore these critical attacks because of the moral tone that inspires them from within. It is the unrecognized otherness that speaks for itself here. Today the ethics of Other cannot be of any use if these contradictions are not resolved. In order to reread and reassess Levinas’s ethical project, one should, so to say, return to its metaphysical core.	en
dc.description.abstract	У статті розглянуто можливі стратегії інтерпретації філософського проекту Емануеля Левінаса (1906–1995) та з’ясовано труднощі читання його філософії як етики. Двома найвагомішими темами opus magnum Левінаса «Тотальність і нескінченне» є метафізика та, власне, етика. Етику і метафізику Левінас строго не розводить, вони радше на аргументативному та понятійному рівні підтримують одна одну. Унаслідок цього етика постає не як практична філософія, а як абстрактна критика насильства. З іншого боку, феміністичні читання демонструють, що вагома частина левінасівських побудов – феноменологія еросу – обмежує етичні потенції його концептів. Важко просто відмахнутися від цих критичних атак, які зсередини живляться моральним запалом, якщо справді стояти на тому, що етика Іншого може дати відповіді на сьогоднішні теоретичні і практичні виклики. Звідси знову виникає потреба повернутися до метафізичного осердя його філософії.	uk
