Abstract
Статтю присвячено проблематиці вивчення насильства у суспільстві стародавніх Афін V ст. до н. е. та репрезентації його в аттичних трагедіях. Розглянуто основні правила стосовно того, що було дозволено показувати на сцені, а що заборонялося; а також релігійні обмеження і жертвопринесення, здійснювати які на сцені було суворо заборонено. Акцентовано увагу на такій важливій особливості давньогрецької культури, як вербальна візуальність, і проаналізовано, який вплив завдяки їй мала трагедія на глядачів.
Description
This article focuses on the problems of violence in Ancient Greek culture and society of the 5th century ВС, and its representation in attic tragedies. We started with the research of the concept of ‘long death’ which is distinctive for Ancient Greek tragedies. We continued with the review of basic scenic rules which set the boundaries of what could be shown on the scene and what was forbidden. It was discovered that under no circumstances tragic actors could play the death on the stage. We also emphasized religious restrictions and
ritual sacrifices, which were strictly forbidden on the stage, because it could offend the gods. During the research we described an important peculiarity of Ancient Greek culture: its verbal aspect. Ancient Greece was the civilization of logos which means that all important texts were passed verbally by wandering poets, aoidoi and rhapsodes. Tragedies were no exceptions from this rule. As we have seen by example of some tragedies by Aeschylus, ancient tragic texts were particularly visual and were used to substitute the main acts of violence on the stage. This verbal way of substitution of violence in Ancient Athens was extremely useful, for it safely eased tensions in the society: people could watch heroes on the stage, they heard about their deeds, and due to the detailed descriptions they lived over their exploits without any harm for themselves.
