Abstract
Description
The author claims that Emmanuel Levinas’s (1906–1995) philosophy of the Other provides the grounds for responding to the critique of the subject in ethics. Solving this problem allows the ethical thought to resist the reduction to the political one. When interpreting the oeuvre of Levinas, it is crucial not only to reconsider the background of his thought and its indebtedness to phenomenological tradition but also to take into account its reception and further impact, particularly on Jacques Derrida’s thinking. First, it allows for putting into question the prevalent account of deconstruction, and post-structuralism altogether, as principally unethical. Second, this approach, which, in a sense, deviates from the original position of Levinas and gives it a new perspective, enables the reading which transcends mere reconstruction and rearticulation. In this respect, it becomes evident that Levinas, with his project of ethics as responsibility, shifts the basis for ethics from "I" as the very origin of ethical action to the Other, whose appeal "Thou shalt not kill" initiates ethical relationship. It secures Levinas’s project from the dire consequences of the critique of the subject by hermeneutics of suspicion. Additionally, despite the constant criticism of Levinas’s reductionist accounts of Husserl’s egology and Heidegger’s ontology, he has a point asserting that one cannot have any preconception of the absolute Other. Furthermore, according to contemporary feminist theory, the very consciousness is gendered, and this fact puts limits on "analogical appresentation" of the Other. Given the question of ethics is an acute one, especially nowadays when the liability towards different and unexpected others continues to grow, Levinas’s philosophy is and will be of great importance.
