Abstract
Description
The article considers the issues of development of some positions that became the foundation for the epistemological models proposed by the Western European philosophers of the late Middle Ages (the 13–14th centuries). Within the context of the most influential epistemological questions for this period, it analyzes the relations between the concepts of the cognitive process, intentionality, mental representation and mental language. The article demonstrates the ways in which the increasing involvement by historians of philosophy to the studies of these philosophers’ legacy over the latest decades helps to articulate a fundamental theory of knowledge issues that remain topical for contemporary epistemology, especially within the framework of Philosophy of Mind. The article also elaborates on the central role of the concept for the late medieval interpretation of signification, which directly influenced the procession of the decisive debates about the relationship between concepts and things. The relevant aspects of intentionality and mental representation are also considered. The author analyzes the process of formation of the two distinctively different semiotic positions in the late medieval philosophy, which were based on the legacy of Boethius and St. Augustine, respectively. The article shows how the change of mind by Boethius between the first and the second edition of his commentary on Aristotle’s ‘Peri hermeneias’ allowed the late medieval philosophers to develop an original model of the relationship between concepts and things. Ultimately, the article demonstrates the significance of the mental language doctrine as a point of synthesis for multiple epistemological ideas.
