The article attempts to analyze contemporary Russian films which supposedly contain hidden propaganda
of the current authoritarian regime.
The author moves through four Russian movies ranged from 2009 to 2014 and discloses some nonobvious
propaganda techniques.
It appears that before 2014, when hostilities in the Eastern Ukraine broke out, Russian films used very
subtle and obscure methods of propaganda, such as camouflage. They showed a contrived variety and
alternative in Russian politics; however, it was only a way to channel the voice of the current or merely
possible opposition. Therefore, it was an illusion for the purposes of placating and sedation.
Nevertheless, in 2014 a new type of movies appeared. This one could differ from the previous “artistic”
movies. It was a forthright agitation movie with hundreds of the most inane stereotypes about Ukrainians
and the Crimea in particular.
Still, the analysis of the corresponding ratings and statistics has showed that straightforward propaganda
does not work as intended; it only gives the joy of recognition for the present adherents, while the
new ones seem to be very critical about what they see.
