Аналіз композиції "Світове дерево" на рушнику: як статистично визначити зміст зображення

Abstract

У статті обговорено принципи кількісного дослідження в культурології, а саме можливості статистики та структурно-семіотичного методу в аналізі явищ традиційної культури. Метод застосовано до композиції українського рушника. Структурно-семіотичний аналіз композиції на рушнику може допомогти відрізнити обов’язкові елементи зображення від декоративних і вста- новити зв’язок між частинами. Нині вважають, що всі контури композиції мають однакову семантику. Але проведений аналіз показав, що однакову семантику мають орнаментальна смуга і рослинний орнамент. Інші елементи потрібні для того, щоб відділити їх від верхнього поля зображення і світового дерева. Це змушує нас переглянути прийняту на сьогодні трактовку семантики цих елементів. Викладений у статті метод може бути застосовано для аналізу інших зображень та різних явищ традиційної та масової культури.

The article discusses the principles of quantitative research in cultural studies, in particular the application of statistical, structural, and semiotic methods for traditional cultural phenomena. These methods are expounded on the Ukrainian rushnyk pattern. Ukrainian rushnyk is a kind of decorated textile. Its role in the traditional Ukrainian rites is still controversial. It is believed that the rushnyk depicts some sacral symbols, supposedly, images of unknown gods. Although there is no evidence of that, this hypothesis is the most spread. The structure and semiotic analysis of the pattern can distinguish obligatory and decorative elements of the pattern and reveal connections between them. The rushnyk pattern contains the following structural elements: the upper level pattern that includes the World Tree, the lower level pattern that includes floral ornaments, the framing, and separate elements. The article analyzes the framing. It includes the following elements: the margin, the upper level frame, the lower level frame, the boundary, the ornamental border, the floral ornament. In particular, the article discusses correlation and similarity of different structural elements of framing. Up to now researchers believe that elements of framing have similar semantics. However, this article argues that only the ornamental border and floral ornament have similar semantics. Other elements of the framing separate them from the upper level pattern which contains the World Tree. As a result, existing interpretation has to be reconsidered. The applied method can be used to analyze other types of patterns and other phenomena of traditional and mass culture.
