Abstract
The article deals with the peculiarities of Latin borrowings penetration into the 19th century’s vernacular. The author analyzes the features of etymologization of the vernacular Latin words and expressions in English and Ukrainian based on the lexicographical, folklore, and ethnographic sources; examines cultural and extralinguistic influences on such lexicon. A borrowing can be made directly to a particular language, or indirectly through other languages. A false reflection of the original form very commonly occurs in the process of borrowing, especially when the lexemes are borrowed from not a closely related language. Folk etymology characteristics of obscure words (foreign, old, etc.) perception often occurs in the language of children or poorly educated people. The latter appeared when the motivational origin of words was hard to explain and the words were reconstructed through their formal relationship with familiar nominations. Thus, a borrowing and free interpretation of scientific, religious, and other Latin terms and expressions (in English linguistics terminology, ‘false-learned words’), into other languages is a form of folk etymology. These words are included in the vernacular, changing its original meaning and leaving only a semantic hint of it. Among Latin borrowings into vernacular, the majority of loanwords are taken from the legal and religious spheres, though some relate to household and everyday spheres.
