Abstract
Статтю присвячено розгляду неконтрольованих однак закономірних процесів відродження української мови в облцентрах західних областей Центральної України та подальшої русифікації українськомовних мешканців інших великих міст України.
Description
The article deals with the non-controlled but expected sociolinguistic processes of both revival of Ukrainian language in the Central-Western Ukraine regional urban centers — and further russification of Ukrainian-speaking dwellers in the rest of the major cities of Ukraine. 90 Having been permanent for two and a half decades, governmental unconcern about the sociolinguistic situation in Ukraine not only preserved the general controversies of the state language use in its kin-state, but also dramatically deepened the territorial aspect of the linguistic antagonism in Ukraine. After 25 years of development as the only official language in its independent nation-state, Ukrainian has finally overcame its functional weakness enough to be used in literally all spheres of social life, but still «won» the urban society of Ukraine only partially. Despite spreading harmonically in all the West and Podolia cities, Ukrainian language has to struggle with Russian language in Zhytomyr and Cherkasy, still losing the most populated urban centers on the Left Bank of the Dnipro and all the megapolises of the Southern East. The aim of the article is to explore the general scale and frames of the Ukrainian language revival in the West — in comparison with the russification victory in the Southern East and language clash in the largest regional cities of Central Ukraine. It is empirically proved that former bilingual regional centers of Western Ukraine and Podolia (Khmelnytskyi and Vinnytsia oblast) becoming more and more exclusively Ukrainophonic. The conclusion of the article is that the progressing split between two areas of different urban cultures in Ukraine is the ongoing problem of its post-revolution society, potentially able to undermine both interethnic peace and nation-building processes in Ukraine. Such peace and national unity are impossible to achieve without appropriate affirmative action policy in favor of state but endangered Ukrainian language.
