Description
The article dwells upon the military pseudonyms of those soldiers who take part in anti-terrorist operation in Donbas. The research material has been the nicknames of soldiers, medics and volunteers. It has been gathered from interviews, questionnaires, and personal conversations. The book «Ukraine’s War as Viewed by TSN Journalists», newspapers «Fakty», «Mirror of the Week», and Internet Resources «Tsenzor.net», «Depot», «Radio «Freedom» and others have become an object of this investigation. The ways of occurrence, origin of these nicknames, and their semantic structure have been outlined; the factors that had played a role in selecting pseudo have been described. The main lexical groups of nicknames have been analyzed. The article has illustrated that the most common soldiers’ pseudos are those that characterize the appearance and physical qualities. The ethnic principle has also become an important aspect in the creation of the military pseudonyms. The author has also shown that pseudo could tell about the position or profession of the soldier. A lot of the current nicknames could be the echo of the past. For those soldiers who have combat experience in the other wars are typical such pseudonyms as «Afghan», «Chechnya», «Iraq» and so on. The motivation for nicknames creation has become words which are intended for family communication («Batya» (Dad), «Did» (Grandpa), «Swat» (Father of a son- (daughter-) in-law), Teshcha (Mother-in-law) etc. The gender aspect in the creating of the nicknames has been analyzed in the research. It is said that diminutive forms are typical mostly for feminine military pseudonyms. The author has confirmed that pseudo for soldiers aren’t only a code word; it is an integral part of them like name, nationality, citizenship etc.
