Abstract
This article presents the results of sociological research that has a metaphorical title, “Invisible Battalion”, and demonstrates that women in the armed forces and in volunteer battalions were not given equal to their male colleagues treatment; their contributions were rarely recognized. The study was conducted in the summer and autumn of 2015. Forty-two interviews were taken with women (aged 20-47) and nine with men who were or are participating in the so-called Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) in the East of Ukraine. Women in the Ukrainian military face gender segregation problems, both vertical and horizontal ones. The state regulates work conditions of military women via paternalist (protective) approach.
