Abstract
У статті досліджено щоденник мандрівного дрібного торгівця з німецьких земель - Абрагама Кона, який емігрував до США в середині ХІХ ст. Описано усвідомлення автором самого себе і свого місця, а також місця своїх співвітчизників у США, відображено його переживання та роздуми. Також у статті висвітлено враження автора від жителів Північної Америки, спостереження їхньої ментальності та характерів. Окремо описано ідеї про облаштування життя єврейської общини на нових територіях як землеробської общини, які вперше в історії американського єврейства висловив саме Абрагам Кон у своєму щоденнику.
Description
The article is centered round the diary of Abraham Kohn S American peddler Jewish Origin, who emigrated to the US in the mid 19th century. The author emigrated to the US in the second wave of Jewish migration from German lands in the mid 19th century. Abraham Kohn represents successful adaptation to the new life, which includes adaptation to economic challenges - working as a peddler, adaptation to city life, and also recession from the strong religious believes.Abraham Kohn describes all the stages which emigrants usually experiencedfrom their first steps in the new land - disembarking from the ship in New York or other big ports, the first impression about a strange country and its people, the search for new roles and occupations. The main emphasis is given to the author’s identity as a Jew, the way he manifests it through encountering challenges in the new land. The evolution of his views and ideas is quite interesting and common for most Jewish emigrants. They started from their religious beliefs which were strong in the beginning. But after they tried to get used to new rules, the main points of Judaism changed and some of them were reduced. Some researchers saw in this process the commence of Reformist movement in Judaism.
The other dimension of this article is directed to the author’s vision of the future of Jewry America. Abraham Kohn at the first time in American Jewish history expressed the idea of organizing the Jewish agricultural communities, similar to Mormons Communities. This idea did not find support among Jews in the USA but was significant for the evolution of Jewish life in North America. Also the article focuses on the idea of considering the US as the “promised land ” and New Jerusalem, which was very common among European Jewry of that time. In addition, the article lights up the author’s observations of American inhabitants, their mentality, culture, and customs.
