Abstract
У статті розглянуто дискусію в російсько-єврейській пресі про статистику ухилення євреїв від загальної військової повинності в Російській імперії. Аналіз матеріалів двох російсько-єврейських видань "Рассвет" і "Русский еврей" показав, яким чином найбільш емансипована частина єврейського населення відреагувала на звинувачення євреїв в ухиленні від військової служби в перше десятиліття після поширення на євреїв загальної військової повинності.

The article examines the discussion in the Russian-Jewish press about the statistics of Jewish evasion from conscription into the Russian Empire. Analysis of the content of the two Russian-Jewish periodicals (Rassvet and Ruskii Yevrei) showed how the most emancipated part of the Jewish population responded to the accusation of the Jews in evasion from military service in the first decade after the extension of the universal conscription on the Jews. Rassvet andRusskii evrei existed during 1879-1884 and, therefore, these periodicals provide valuable testimony about one of the most significant periods of the history of Jews in the Russian Empire. In 1880-1881, the Russian- Jewish press changed the approach to explaining the official statistics on Jewish evasion of the general conscription. The new approach demonstrated loss of confidence in the official statistics and in the policy that was based on this statistical data. In addition, considerable attention in the Russian-Jewish press to the debate around the statistics of Jewish evasion was probably an evidence of attempts to establish a dialogue between Jews and the opponents of the emancipation of the Jewish population of the Russian Empire. However, such an attempt for dialogue did not bring any result. Therefore, the publication of these articles was suspended in the last two years of the existence of these periodicals. Other authors continued to refer to existing articles, but these newspapers did not publish any new material with the detailed analysis of the conscription of Jews to the army. The transition of Russian-Jewish editions, from the defensive strategy to an active rejection of accusations of Jews in the evading of the military service, took place not simultaneously in these two periodicals. Rassvet published materials to refute claims of Jews in mass evasion of military service in 1880. Russkii Yevrei adopted a new strategy only in 1881. However, both editions paid a lot of attention to conscription and service of Jews in the army.
